My smart phone is pushing 6 years old.It still works though I think the volume is decreasing..That was the first sign that my old flip phone was about to kick the bucket..Any ideas as to how long a smart phone should last?..Is 6 years old ancient or just broken in?

What model phone do you have Larry? Even though they are sealed units, if otherwise you like your phone, there are companies that can switch the battery out (if indeed that is the issue). www.hours-locations.com/batteries-plus/nc/Clean the ears out first!

Amazing how a phone from the 1920's that cost probably $3-$5 (if you were able purchase one) is still working without a hitch but, a new fangled Cell Phone that costs anywhere I,m guessing from $200 to $700 can barely last 5 years not to mention its durability is in no comparison to it predecessor that could be thrown across the room and beaten against the wall and still come up work perfectly.
Isn't modern technology wonderful!

Isn't modern technology wonderful! Funny you should say that... Today in Phoenix I saw a heavily used 1970's pickup truck driven by an old fart that picks up pallets.....he looked like he probably would have an old flip phone if he was even on cell. Behind him was a guy in a $70,000.00 New truck still without plates in a fancy wrap job with the local Beer distributorship...the guy was out walking around his truck with a cellphone giving play by play to command central. There was a tow rope in between as the old guy was helping him get clear of the offramp.

I use a Flip Phone. I can text messages but that is about all other than voice. I cannot imagine what a Smart Phone would cost.

In recent years I have had a Samsung Galaxy S7 and Iphone7 Plus...both were bought by my son, both were pretty solid because I kept them in Otterbox Defender rubberized cases, they looked knew when they were re-sold...the Iphone 7 was an $1,100.00 phone at the time.
I now have an Iphone 11 Pro Max, again from my son..it is about half the price of the Iphone 7, but with more features.
If it was me, I would still be content with the Samsung, but my son mails me the phones when he thinks I should upgrade.

I had a Note 3 from work until I retired, then a couple of cheap Samsungs. I spend way too much time on the phone, so I decided to go with the best. One Plus 7 Pro. Wife got one too and we're very satisfied.

Tried them all over the years and Motorola is the best. I have made phone calls in the middle of nowhere and they work when other phones would not and I can always hear on them. I had to replace the battery in the Moto after five years. Not to shabby.

My IPHONE 6S is 6 yrs old, been told it’s worth 150$ on an IPHONE 11, still working, gonna keep it. Still in one of them Otterboxes because I’m taking it on tractor when I bushhog, don’t know why, couldn’t hear it if it rings, and the vibrate mode on a John Deere tractor is a joke!

The latest version of shooting earmuffs have bluetooth technonlogy, they filter out harmful noises, but you can talk to people, quietly listen to a podcast or talk on the phone while in a noisy environment...that would be great on a tractor. www.amazon.com/Peltor-Electronic-Protector-Bluetooth-Protection/dp/B06W56YRWJ

I'm an unabashed Apple fanboy. Macbook Pro, iPad, and iPhone (X now, several since 3). Love the way they work together and how intuitive it is. My wife had an Android a while back and I had to Google for instructions every time she wanted to do something on it.

I've had good luck with my Galaxys. Every 2-3 years I buy the newest one and keep it in an otterbox. It's saved them from numerous falls at work.
I occasionally see the old school, 70 lbs, phones while working on houses. I'm pretty sure that in another 50 years theyll still be working...IF there is still a such thing as a land line. They were built like Volvos!

I once had a Razer flip phone. I liked it but like a few other phones I've had it finally died.My wife wanted me to text so I ended up with an S3. When it died I got the S5 that I've had now for almost 6 years..No idea where I will go when it dies..I don't do a lot on a phone so I can't see paying almost a thousand bucks for one..

Isn't modern technology wonderful! Well, actually it is, wonderful that is. A phone in 1920 cost roughly $14.00, which is the same as $180.00 today (according to the Google), definitely a good deal. Except all you could do with it was to make a call from the spot it was located, likely across a "party" line. By contrast, smartphones are actually small computers, with astounding capability relative to a 1920's phone, that also happen to make phone calls. Even as recently as the 1960's the same computing power would have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and required a climate controlled room or rooms to operate. When you consider what we can carry around in our pockets, it's a pretty good deal. Unless of course, all you want to do is make a phone call. I never thought I would like a smart phone, until I got one.

I never thought I would like a smart phone, until I got one. I don't think its a secret around here how I feel about most new innovations, big business, etc. so what I'm going to say is not going to be out of character.
I think this cellphone rage is one of the stupidest things mankind gotten himself into and big business is making millions of you all. I grew up in a time that things where much simpler I reckon and I don't see the need for a phone strapped to my hip even if its a mini PC with the power to conquer worlds.
I've spent 66 years on this planet without one, why do I need one now? So I can pay twice as much for phone service as landline and get less service. I hear more complaints about no service in an area that its just amazing anyone would want one. Of course there's always the gaming to keep you entertained till service comes back or NOT. No thank you, still don't see a need for one, oh I can see where it might come in handy on occasion but, its not worth the price or the other drawbacks it comes with.

RD I love you but I’m gonna disagree, that little phone has more computing power than the astronauts had when they went on the moon. Progress sometime is 💩 but it has its uses, you’ve got a library in your pocket, a GPS, maps, all in all it’s a useful tool, it’s use has stopped conversation which is sad, my children have their heads in them when visiting, I go on porch and smoke, they never know I was gone.!

I understand the attraction to them but, sir..........I'm not going to the moon, I have maps and I'll never get lost because my GPS is out of range or wasn't updated or updated properly and haven't a need for computing anything my mind can't handle when away from home.
I say bring back phone booths, the homeless and drunkards have no were to pee. Joking aside and NOT to be argumentative, I just don't see the need or have the want to wear tennis shoes, shorts, a fanny-pack and a cellphone. I don't like change because it usually means giving up whats simple and complicating our lives, I have enough complications already, don't need anymore. My motto as always, K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid!) Of course there are things I have to accept, not that I like'em, like working on your car nowadays. Not simple anymore, takes a least a half hour just to find the engine (exaggeration but, ya know what I mean), Just watching TV can be a chore now. Gotta make sure if it tuned to HDMI 1 or 2 or TV, yadda yadda yadda. If ya got 100 -200 channels you could spend most the day looking for something to watch that aint trying to sell you something or decent enough to watch and I mean without blood and guts plastered all over the screen and sexual activity every 5 minutes or less and just plain moronic programing. Remember TV when ya had 4 channels to watch and ya had to get up to change channels and was content? I know ya do. Okay, before I go on into a real rank I'll leave it at this, no sir, don't want one, don't need one.

I use a Samsung because they are the most secure AND best for music. Apple compresses their digital music files by 50%. Samsung saves 100% of the data. If you like music, avoid iphones.
I grew up on maps and City Guides. Not sure why anyone would choose to keep using maps when most navigation is almost flawless these days.
Voice commands are the way to go. That way you don't have to worry about fat fingers.

What is your source for the compression statement? I love music, and I love my iPhone. I have 60 Gigabytes of MP3 and ALAC files on my phone, none compressed. (Though, of course, those formats are themselves compressed. You're not talking AIFF, are you?)

Hell even Google maps and Mapquest are wrong 20% of the time on how to get there the easiest or even how to get there sometimes. I've NEVER found a map that was wrong, maybe not up to date but, never wrong. And out of my 25+ years of driving a truck and my 50 years of driving any vehicle, I have never gotten lost.

I just prefer the way Driods work for music + Apple tunes is a licencing spiders web from device to device. As far as people getting lost because of their GPS...not sure what to say other than "operator error?"

Apple ALAC is compressed up to 60% but 16bit apple says no loss of quality. Let me mash you double cheeseburger with a sledgeomatic it will still be the same hamburger but it will suck. FLAC 32bits 48000hz studio quality no smashed with the sledgeomatic mucho better. Some not all albums can be 4to5 gigs in size vs less than or much less than a gig.
