Last night I watched COME AND SEE, a Russian film about the horrific war experiences of a 13YO partisan boy. (8/10) Sobering to say the least. The cold war shenanigans kept us from giving the Russians the credit they deserved in WW2. The horrors their nation went thru at the hands of the Germans are almost inexpressible. I think that if it weren’t for the “leaders” of both our countries we would like the Russians. Tough, resilient people. I wish they were our friends.

I’ve been to Cong, where the film was largely shot. Wandering around I stopped into a shabby, dirt floor “grocery” right on the corner opposite the monument shown in the beginning of the film. Burlap bags of potatoes, banded bundles of pressed peat, and baskets full of the real thing. The proprietor came out and we chatted. I asked where Cohan’s Bar was. He said “And you’re standing in it, you are!”

Caddyshack. Still the same old silliness. Loved Caddyshack. When it came out, I was the greenskeeper of a golf course. There were a couple ponds on the course and we had a muskrat problem. They were tunneling along the banks and into the landfill dam. I was told to kill them, so I kept a double barrel 12 gauge in my truck. Shot about 30 of them in 2 years. So the regular golfers weren't surprised to hear a shotgun go off while they were playing. And one of the guys working for me was rather scroungy looking like Bill Murray's character - and he would sneak off at lunch time to smoke some weed - just like Bill Murray's character. So when the movie came out it was a big hit with the golfers - and all the regulars at the course were laughing about all the parallels between the movie and real life at the course.

I figured that there had to be some truth in it. The only golfing I have done is in scrambles, where a shotgun is used for signaling the start.

One morning I was out on the course early, trying to catch some muskrats in the pond. I was sitting under a tree with the shotgun loaded - just waiting. There was a guy who worked in the pro shop evenings and weekends. He was a high school teacher and he was out playing a quick 9 holes before the course was open. I saw him teeing the ball up to drive it over the pond. It was a 186 yard par three. He hit the ball. As it went by me, I shot it out of the air. Good thing we were friends.

I was up, on a hillside shooting outward and only slightly upward. This was ~1979. If you were to fire a shotgun on a public golf course within the city limits today, SWAT would show up.

I just watched the seven part mini-series on Netflix "The Queen's Gambit". A whole lot of fun. Great movie.
I am going to watch it again looking for pipe smokers.

COLD BLOOD with Jean Reno once again playing a hitman, this time retired. I like Reno. He has a screen presence that is always interesting to watch. Unfortunately this one has a confusing and unlikely plot and, basically, goes nowhere with an ending that is resolution-less. (4/10)
(Could be that some of the plot would have made more sense if the film had subtitles. My hearing has me relying on them and if I know in advance that the film doesn’t have them I will not watch it. This one did not.)

We watch "The Professional" at least once a year. I really like Luc Besson movies in general.

I absolutely HATE Shane! I hate the whole stupid movie, and especially the end. I wish he had just turned around and shot the whining kid. 😉👺

I wonder if he also hated PALE RIDER. Nope! Like Pale Rider, most of the spaghetti westerns. Like the Expendables Red 1&2, Taken, Constantine, John Wick. You know, where they don't stand around chatting when there's killing needing to be done. I watch Bond movies for the scenery. Oh! I really really hate The Champ! But not as bad as Shane. 👺😖😡🤯👹

Tonight I watched A PRIVATE WAR about Marie Colvin the war correspondent who was killed in Qom in 2012. Powerful stuff. Very good cast and sound production values. You don’t “enjoy” a film like this. You... absorb it. (8/10)

I watched regarding Henry. Starring Harrison Ford. 9 out of 10. Isn’t that the one where Ford’s character wakes up from a coma only to discover he lived a different life and trying to set things right?

We have so much in common including the corrupt governments. Kalishnakov loved the US and was a member of the NRA.

Last night we re-watched the new True Grit with Jeff Bridges. As much as I love John Wayne, this newer one was much closer to the original book, the dialog was more true, and I just really enjoy it.
It seems to almost be one of those love-it-or-hate-it movies. But I consider it a good, solid, entertaining movie
