I bought the block, I drilled it I carved it. Whats wrong cant be seen from this angle. I drilled the shank about 3mm off center, thus the shank is off to one side of the bowl. Also, due to mistakes in the shank the stem fit isnt perfect. More pics:

"A" for effort. A basic pipe is a nothing more than a block of wood, with two holes drilled into it. Both holes have to meet, and one hole is bigger than the other. The rest is not so easy.
You made yourself a pipe, but you've also recognized that mistakes were made during the fabrication. Figure out what you need to do, and correct them. You'll get better.
Bet your pipe will smoke, just fine. The bowl won't know its hole is not in the right place. Just like some people.

Also, due to mistakes in the shank the stem fit isnt perfect. More pics: I'm not sure how you drilled the pipe, but it looks to me like the shank is actually leaning off to one side. Did you shape the shank first, then drill, or drill after shaping? To me, it looks like you may have drilled the stem mortise at a greater angle than the already rooster-eyed shank, and then tried to compensate by taking too much off one side, leaving the mortise and airhole off center. With your tool set, You may benefit from shaping the whole stummel, and then drilling it. Look on pipemakersforum.com for some info on shaping first. A lot of carvers use that method.

I drilled the block before shaping. I just miss marked the center for the air hole and mortise. Because if that I had to carve the entire shank off one side. (Or at least thats what I believed to be the solution)

Oh and BTW, I almost didn't post this one. Though its really pretty, the mistakes are so glaring I am a little embarrassed by it. That said, I posted for critique, so by all means keep telling me the brutal truth as you wee it. Don't get me wrong, compliments on what is right are nice and I want those too, but I want to know what I need to improve on, (that I don't already see) so I can improve. Bottom line this is a fascinatingly challenging hobby and I am having a blast even if my pipes are far from perfect.

Sir, you made a pipe, by yourself. That's more than many of us can say.
Good job.

The title I used has bugged me since I posted this. While this is the first I've carved completely from undrilled briar, its my 4th pipe carve. I didn't mean to be misleading to anyone who didn't already know that.
