While enjoying a pipe tonight under the London Bridge at Lake Havasu, I sat across from a struggling fish and chips restaurant due to the corona-virus doing takeout only to seemingly no takers. A homeless guy was wailing out some songs, and he actually didn't sound bad. I walked over to the restaurateur and said that I wanted to buy the guy a $20.00 gift certificate for food..."Did he cuss you out?" was the response. "He even cusses out people that compliment him". I replied that I had not talked to him, I was sitting off in the distance. I walked over to him and set it down by him, he thanked me and I went back to my seating place probably 50 yards away. He stopped playing and went off into the shadows and then came out screaming like an animal at the restaurateur, that he didn't want his F#@%&*#! food and went on a long tirade as he threw it across the table. It seems he only wanted cash, presumably for alcohol. The housekeeper that makes up my room will be pleased though, I am sure that he or she is a hard working individual that will appreciate it. A spotless room is appreciated by the weary traveler.

...I'm sure they aren't all like that.
But good on ya for offering the food in the first place. I normally do the same - buy a sandwich or something like that. Over here they are extremely appreciative.

Can't fix crazy. Good on your for doing it. I find most of the homeless people quite thankful when you stop to try and give them a hand.

All the homeless guys that stand by the interstate by my work turn down anything that isn't cash. A couple even have vehicles that they go back to after a long hard day of sign holding. My daughter made homeless packs in her class to give to them that had hand warmers , socks , bottles of water ..etc. They took them because it was from a little girl I think but later I found them whirled into the bushes near their panhandling spot. Never seen any of them smoking a pipe - must be a miserable life.

I offer 'em jobs, work to do to earn. A man does not just need a full belly and a warm bed, but he needs his dignity back. His self respect.
Sometimes it works. Ive gotten homeless guys back on their feet before with jobs, apartments they eventually rented with money they earned from that job, driver's license etc. Usually it doesnt, but sometimes it does. But the few that do are worth all the ones that dont.

Many years ago I read of a fella who gave classes teaching folks how to beg for money..I guess it's hard to know who really is needy these days..I know some who are..I don;t have a lot to help them with..I do what I can.

I like all the responses here, you guys are some fine individuals. For my part, my wife and I will occasionally give a dollar or two cash, but more often she will go into the fast food place they are close to and buy them something. Now these aren't the freeway panhandlers these are obviously homeless folk that happen to be sitting near the place, usually not even begging but just trying to find some shade. Those folks are always appreciative when my wife or youngest daughter walks up with a bag of food for them.
Flip side of this however. Years ago, when I lived in McMinnville Oregon i was approached by a well dressed gent who claimed to be a veteran down on his luck and trying to get to somewhere else. I'm a vet, I have a soft spot for vets. Had I any cash on me Id have given it to him. Thankfully I was flat broke at the time. Fast forward 6 months, I'm at the same WalMart and the same guy approaches me with the same story. Seems he was just passing through but passing eternally slowly. I Smiled and politely declined. I wanted to point out the flaw in his scheme but I decided to just leave it alone.
The sad part of this is I know there are a lot of down on there luck veterans, but I now am suspicious of anyone claiming to be a vet in need...

I've been homeless. I quit a riding job in Chalice, ID that went south and hitch hiked to Cody, Wyoming years ago. Boots were bad run over at heel and had holes in the soles that were so bad I wrapped them in duct tape every morning. I had my duffle bag and sleeping bag, but some jackwagon had stolen my saddle. Got into Cody with $19.00 in my jeans, no job, no home and no contacts. Got some groceries and paid 6.00 for a spot in a campground to spread my bed roll where I could get a shower. Next day I called ranches all day from a payphone. Another 6.00 that night, and I was flat busted.
The next day, the lady running the park offered me a bowl of soup, a sandwich for lunch and another night in my spot if I would pick up all the cigarette butts in the campground. I did.
Next day, I got a job hauling hay for her dad, and the old guy paid me $15.00. That covered supper that night, another night's sleep and tomorrow's breakfast. Next day, the owner of an outfit I had called came by, talked to me, and offered me a job on the spot for $350.00 a month and a spot in the bunkhouse. I took it. And was happy for it.
I had showered every day, stayed shaven and respectable, kept my shirt tucked in, said "yes, sir" and "yes, ma'am" and took any job offered until I got the job I wanted. I never lost my dignity or self respect.
There is "homeless" and then there is "homeless". I'll give the shirt off my back to the one, cuz I've been there. The other one? Im a bit of a hard sell.

We have a homeless guy that lives under a tarp at my office. He's been there at least 4 years now. I give him a few bucks now and then for him and his dog. I've talked to him quite a bit. He eats gets 4 hot dogs a day at QT to feed his dog and him. IF he has left over he buys beer. I gave him a pipe and some tobacco about a year ago. Sometimes when I come by the office at night I can smell his pipe. Every once and awhile he will ask for some more tobacco. I give him Lane HGL. I brought him a pound one time but he said it was too much and couldn't keep it. He didn't have any room to keep it. He would prefer to have the 1/2 pint jar.

Back in the fifties there was a theater in Detroit that stayed open all night. They showed old comedy films. They charged 50 cents..The homeless would come in during bad weather and sit and sleep..The owner got some flack for letting that go on. He didn't care.He said he was helping folks who needed it.

A great illustration of the difference. You don't need to have Sherlock Holmes deductive reasoning to figure out what a given situation is. A bit of street smarts also clarifies the vision.

I thought the London Bridge was in London? We stole it. The English think that they sold us a useless bridge for a ridiculous price and we had to disassemble it, move it 8k miles and reassemble it.

In a conversation with the pipe club of London members, I am trying to convince them that they can buy it back, minus my fees. I hope to broker the deal.

On the rare occasion that I have cash, I have no problem giving it out to the homeless.
I'm sure I've been "suckered" a few times, but who cares? I've never given money that I needed. Probably would have been spent on stupid crap anyway.
If they need or want money bad enough to beg, I'll give it to them. It's not my job to decide whether or not they really need it.

I prefer to spend my disposable income with monthly support to an orphanage that my cousin runs in Uganda, been doing it for years. That doesn’t leave any leftover money to give away... in my original post in this thread, I attempted to show compassion to a bum that wanted booze, and he verbally assaulted the staff at the outdoor restaurant.
As bat shite crazy as the guy was, I regret getting close enough for him to have the ability to potentially attack me.
Lesson learned.

I used to give them cash until I read how much money they made, how much CA gave them, and they vacationed several weeks in Hawaii. Made more money than I did & vacationed better. We helped a lot of people out of bad times in our lives though, just not going to be a chump. I have been helped out too.

When I was hotshotting I pulled in a restaurant in Winnie Texas on the way back home. Sitting near front window so I could watch my rig. I could see the offramp also, at the end of the offramp was a fellow and a very small boy, the little boy had a sign, the fellow was on a crutch, cars were stopping and handing money, it was near dusk, I was finished with my meal, the duo started to hobble towards the over pass, then I witnessed a miracle, fellow on a crutch put it on his shoulder and briskly walked under the overpass with the little boy. I give food, never money, help my neighbors, I believe in helping I Garronte!

I don’t hand out money to panhandlers but when I cross the border to Mexico I change a few bucks to dimes and quarters to handout to the children.

He came back proudly smiling all the time ( he never smiled much before). The teeth were as uniform as Chiclets.

Yeah, I can imagine that there are good options, one would have to do some research when traveling to another country for any procedure.
