You saw a pattern. The only chess book by Bobby Fisher I've ever read was unique. Instead of a bunch of chess problems, what's the best move here type stuff, his was all where's the KILL here. That is, it was nothing but a bunch of winning patterns, ie get this position and he's done. My favorite mate of all time remains Boden's Mate. It happens early in the game, comes out of NOWHERE, and is the only mate I know of that is made by the two bishops. What you're looking for is one bishop (g2) covering two important flight squares for the King, then the second bishop swoops down for the mate: In the case above, there had just been a pawn on b7. All white needed to do is move that dratted b7 pawn, usually with a Queen sacrifice (as in Qa6, if black takes the Queen with b7 it's mate, but he can't stop the Queen coming round the back with Qxa7). Here's an actual example. All white needs to do is move that miserable b7 pawn, which he can do with Rxc6+, and it's a forced mate. Here's one on the other side. Black has just moved the b2 pawn with a forced Queen sacrifice, Qc3+, and the f1 Bishop has the mate: It often shows up early in the game, and seems to come out of nowhere, and is a purty mate.

I've been thinking of reading more books by grandmasters on chess strategy; see if it helps improve my game. (Jose Raul Capablanca is one I've heard of).

Grandmasters' books tend to go over my chess head; I prefer simpler ones like How To Beat Your Dad At Chess - I liked that one. There was a guy on a previous forum that had considered turning pro. We started an email game and that *%$^&@* came out with an opening I'd never even seen. I lasted about five moves and we mutually decided it was kinda dumb to continue There are some excellent chess programs out there, like the Chessmaster series, but playing a computer is no fun because, (a) The computer feels no pain, and (b) You do.

I've never bothered to read the books. Tried one once.. It read a lot like a textbook. Even when studying something I love I have trouble with text books...

People have learning differences. Some do well being left alone with a book, some don't. Also not all books are created equal; just because you can play doesn't mean you can teach.

Something I learned the hard way. Just because you can teach one subject doesn't mean you can teach another. I used to teach income taxes for one of the box stores. I've since tried to teach other interests and failed miserably.

I've recently gotten back into the game. It's nearly impossible to find someone to play OTB these days, so I've just started up on Lichess.org (LewsTherinKinslayer) and Chess.com (LewsTherinTelam0n). I'm not good, but enjoy playing.
If anyone feels like it, add me on either/both of those sites and we'll play sometime.

Anyone ever makes it to the greater Phoenix Metro area and I'll be glad to meet them for a pipe and a game at one of the local cigar lounges! (Big Sticks in mesa is a good one, and close to me)
