I just checked P&C's list of their top 40 selling tobaccos, and was surprised by the list. Shows what I know. Here's the top twenty. If you want to see the whole list of forty, here's the link: www.pipesandcigars.com/shop/top-selling-tobacco/1800130/1. Lane 1-Q 2. Prince Albert 3. Lane BCA 4. Sutliff Vanilla Custard 5. Capt Black Gold 6. Lane RLP-6 7. Capt Black Royal 8. D&R Three Sails 9. Lane Burley-Without-a-Bite 10. Scotty's Trout Stream 11. Half and Half 12. D&R Windsail 13. Capt Black Dark 14. Sir Walter Raleigh Regular 15. Super Value Vanilla 16. Lane HS-3 17. Admiral's Choice Vanilla Cavendish 18. Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic 19. Orlik Golden Sliced 20. Sutliff Molto Dolce I guess I can understand all the OTCs, Prince Albert, Capt Black and the like, but Sutliff Vanilla Custard is their 4th best selling tobacco??? WTH? Where did Scotty's Trout Steam come from? Who the hell's Scotty?

It just proves that there are a lot more pipe smokers out there than those who participate on pipe forums.

Some of those bring back memories of back when I first started smoking a pipe. Good times.

Lane 1Q is one on my bucket list. If I ever to go USA I'm picking myself up a tin or pouch of that (and Carter Hall too).

I wonder how many shops order those in big bulk to resell?

Aromatics are the pipe world's top sellers. Without aros, this boat don't float. After thirty years of smoking, I find aromatics to be at the top of my smoking list.

That is certainly a list of surprises. I'm not a fan of aros, but that list is almost all aros.

I'm surprised by how different it is from Smokingpipes where Escudo and Nightcap are perpetual top 10 and here they're in the 30s at best. I wonder if it's due to them separating bulks from tins in their top-seller lists?

Looks like they focus on being a bulk shop.

There are only 3 on that list of 20 that I keep in my cellar/rotation.

#1 should be Out of Stock. So subtle it seems like your not even smoking tobacco. #2 would be Wrong Thing Shipped, often a varied and surprising smoke.

When I started as a tobacconist in 1993, these four tobaccos constituted 98% of all the tobacco sold in America: 1Q, RLP-6, BCA, and BLWB. 1Q alone was the tobacco 95% of all pipe smokers in the USA smoked.

Looks like they focus on being a bulk shop. I think they focus on being the type of shop that makes money and they have found that selling bulk makes money. I also refer back to my previous comment. There are a lot of pipe smokers out there who don't participate in forums and they are buying the tobaccos they like.

Just as a lot of people drink Bud Lite What is it with Americans and light beer? Bud Lite has failed here twice before but it's really being pushed once again. I've heard that ya'll even have Corona Light up in the US! So, what's it appeal?

I only drink a local German style beer, but I used to drink XXX Mexican beer when I could get it.

I've heard that ya'll even have Corona Light up in the US! So, what's it appeal? Because the sheeple and lemmings believe the advertising that light beer is "diet beer", Because some are ignorant enough to think light beer means they won't get drunk as fast. Because they drink what is "trendy" and not what is good. Thankfully, there are enough of us who remember what good beer is and there are a lot of beer drinkers who have discovered small brewery and craft beers. As for Corona, in my opinion, Corona is not worth the money people are paying for it. I've been to Chile, Peru and both sides of Mexico and have sample a wide variety of beers from those areas. I prefer Modelo Negra and Dos Equis Amber. Given a choice between Pacifico and Corona, I will drink the Pacifico first.

Maybe... and I'm just spit-ballin' here... maybe some people like lite beer. You know, like some people may enjoy smoking 1Q. I know, I know.. it's a radical theory and all.

People will drink whatever is advertised. Why do companies spend millions of dollars for a 30-second ad during the SuperBowl showing a hot chick in a bikini riding down the beach on a white horse with a bottle of crappy Zima in the corner?
It's because more than a million people will see that ad and go and buy some crappy Zima.
Old Milwaukee used to be advertised, and it cost the same as Budweiser and was on the same shelf. They'd show the lobster fishermen back on the dock with their lobster and an Old Milwaukee. As soon as they quit advertising it, it dropped to the bottom shelf with the Shaefer Lite and cost as little, and folks then thought of it as crap beer. The only thing that changed was the advertising.
Miller Lite has ads aimed at Mexicans, so when you go to a Mexican neighborhood you'll see lots of Miller Lite.
People will drink whatever is advertised.

I have a shameful confession: I've begun to appreciate Lane 1-Q as a nice, multi-hour, tobacco for my early morning reading and writing sessions.
Plus it gets the star of approval from the sister-in-law if not her sister who claims to have the nose of a bloodhound but can't distinguish 1-Q from Marlboro Reds (I don't smoke cigarettes despite what my wife says).
Might have to take a walk down that list and, yeah, gonna have to look up ole Scotty.

I don't mind lite beer at all - I drink what I like. That said, I don't think I'd drink Guinness Lite if it ever came out...but then again, I don't think the Irish would ever produce Guinness Lite in the first place.

I've heard that ya'll even have Corona Light up in the US! So, what's it appeal? We are gluttons. We love "all you can eat" food even though it's usually garbage and we love to drink lite beer because you can drink a million of em. When I pour a barrel aged stout, most people around me look at it and say "how can you drink that, it looks like motor oil".
Cigars are the same way, true connoisseurs wouldn't dream of smoking the most popular selling brands.

Im definitely not a connoisseur of beer or tobacco. I rarely drink a beer, but when I do its usually Coors. I drank a Guiness once in Thailand, of all places, and it was pretty good. And I had a German beer brewed in Namibia while I was in Botswana once that I really liked. It was called Windhoek. But mostly, not a big beer drinker. I tried a craft beer once, Rolling Rock or something. Didnt like it too much.
Prefer my pipe tobacco usually pretty much in the middle of the spectrum (think Carter Hall et al), and my cigars dark and strong (Cohiba Nicaragua, Maduro Blacks etc). And coffee? I like my coffee so strong we get into a fist fight every morning and I gotta whip its a@@ into subjection before I can drink it.
Its just personal taste, I guess.
