What's your favorite cut of tobacco? Mine is flake. I didn't plan it this way, it just worked out that most of my favorite tobaccos are flakes. Ribbon is OK too. I don't like shag -- it burns too fast. Plug is too much of a pain. You?

It depends … lots of variables with each different blend and pipe. Even if I chose "flake" that means that some will be rubbed out to ribbon and some cube cut. I guess the answer is that I like them all for different reasons and occasions.

As slow as I smoke, they're all fine to me. No preference.

This got me thinking. For me it just depends on the day and time I have. How much effort do I want to put in to it. I don’t have any experience with cube cut. As far as I know LOL

I like everything. I do gravitate more towards shags and flakes. I know, opposite ends of the spectrum. For me, though, the particular blend is best in the cut it comes in. I can't imagine Mac Baren Navy Flake in a shag, and I can't imagine Dark Bird's Eye in a flake. Both would probably be good, but I guess I trust that the blender made the correct decision for the cut. I DO think Reiner Long Golden Flake would make a great shag cut, though.

For on the go smokes I like ribbon. Preferably fine, but not quite shag.
At home I smoke a lot more flakes and coins.

Plug, then flake. I like the additional step of having to cut my own flakes from a plug - slows me down even more.

I guess the answer is that I like them all for different reasons and occasions. Kind of sums it up for me, but with a caveat. I am mission specific. At home, flakes, plugs, coins, and rope... I have the time to prepare it. Traveling and in the rig, loose cut that is already dried to what I need to load up and move out fits the bill. I put crumble cake in that same league. I have been known on the road to use the convenience store microwave to dry down flakes, coins, plugs. People have looked at me “Like what the hell is going on?”. Keep Calm and Puff On.

for 99% of time, more ribbon that anything. Possible exception something like PirateKake, a "crumble easy betwenn the hands" gets the pieces down better. Even the diabolical 10Russians requires a little "rubdown". Too damn old & been at it too long to mess with cutting with a knife or some such. Same with pipe stems, no way gonna waste time & smoking with de-oxidating . All 51 of my pipes, either bought that way or had Lucite stems made by professionals. More smoke time, much less prep mess with the above.

For my taste, something like Holiday Mixture which mixes ribbon, cube, and amorphous blobs. Failing this, ribbon works real well and the Dunhill ribbon especially well.

I've found recently that for a good pack, flake allows for a more consistent 'size'. When I break a flake,I tend to roll it and nip off the end with my fingers as I go down the flake. This gives me a nice uniform size of tobacco to pack and a most consistent burn. It's what works for me, at least. With ribbon etc, there's a lot more chance of air pockets unless I break them into smaller pieces, which is harder to do than with flake, for me.
So, strangely enough, I never planned it this way either, but flake for me.

I'll smoke them all. But my favorite is flake or broken flake. Just more fun. Sadly, I'm limited on how often I can have a steak due to cholesterol reasons. But when I have one it's a filet these days (though Ribeye is the most flavorful).

I really like plugs. I enjoy the ritual of preparation and being able to make the tobacco exactly the way I want it for the pipe I want to use.
If a certain blend comes in both flake and plug form, I will choose the plug every time.

Broken or unbroken flakes, they way I smoke they are the easiest to pack and go. I do not know why but ribbon cuts do not like me.

I've recently started enjoying the small cube cut blends like Peterson's Founder's Choice. I'm making a list of other blends with the cube cut for my next order.

I like to fold & stuff flake. I also like plug & how I can prep it for my exact preference for a particular tobacco blend. These are my two favorites.

I've always stuck with ribbon. However, I'm branching out - just ordered some samples of Mac Baren | H & H Old Dark Fired and Peterson | De Luxe Navy Rolls Pipe. We'll see how it goes.

Flake. It seems to burn a little longer and I find it easier to pack. Then maybe ribbon cut but that may be because I smoke a lot of english blends.

Flake, broken flake, ribbon and sometimes plug and cube...just no shag. Nothing against coins; there's some great ones out there, but none here at the moment.

Been smoking a lot of flake lately so I’m going with that. I also like cube cut and theoretically I could cube cut a flake if I wasn’t so lazy.
