I spent childhood summers running around beneath drying tobacco hanging in the barns of our ancestral farm in eastern NC. Four generations of my family has grown tobacco on that farm. My Grandmother is full of stories of her and her 12 (!) older siblings walking through the fields, picking off the worms and dropping them into old soup cans full of kerosene. I remember when the smell of downtown Durham NC was entirely dominated by the aroma of curing tobacco. So it's not terribly surprising that I'm a cig smoker of 30 years. I have tried pipes off and on over the years to no avail, but a couple of months ago it finally clicked with a serendipitous bowl of Peterson Flake. The smell and taste of that stuff is a nuclear nostalgia bomb and thus I was hooked. I write software for a living in Charlotte NC. I've played drums for longer than I've smoked. A slice of my current life is illustrated by the following photo, which displays an appropriate number of cobs and a brand-new and burgeoning tobacco horde as they begin to dominate my home office/studio. As I make this post, I'm watching the replay of qualifying for the "FORMULA 1 PIRELLI GRAN PREMIO DELLA TOSCANA FERRARI 1000 2020" race that's happening tomorrow. I don't care who wins as long as George Russell out qualifies Latifi again. So far I have discovered that: - I love VAs despite the damage that they do to the lining of my mouth.
- I want to eat Perique.
- Burley is a warm bed.
- Latakia I can take or leave.
- I REALLY love pipe smoking.
- I am destined for codgerdom. A destiny that I will gladly accept.
- Pipe folks seem to be among the better variety of folks.
Thanks for welcoming me into the fold.

Welcome to the Patch, from the High Plains. My ancestors on my mother's side were from middle Tennessee and I remember visiting a huge tobacco barn near Sparta. It was mostly empty at that time of year, but oh the aroma!

Welcome from central north Florida...hopefully not the destination of the tropical depression heading into the Gulf. I pray it doesn't visit the folks who have already suffered through Hurricane Laura.
Sounds like you have started a well trod road to bliss!

Cool story, Dave. That feeling of nostalgia is something that makes pipe smoking so satisfying. I’m new myself, but have enjoyed my time immensely so far.
Good to meet a fellow F1 fan!

Another welcome from NC.
I live just east of you a bit in Pinehurst.
When we get through this bout of woohan flu and things get back to normal, I'm hoping things will pick back up for some of the pipe meetings @ JR's Cigar shop in Mooresville. When that happens I'll try to meet you and the others there.

I’m an FNG, too, but just had to chime in a welcome and compliment you on your introduction. I found it very interesting, and well done. So far I have found this place to be friendly and helpful with lots of very knowledgeable folks willing to answer any question you might have. I’m enjoying my visits here and am sure you will too.

Hello from Cajun Country. It’s Cane cutting time here. It's been 160 years since my ancestors harvested cane in Louisiana and they did it a LOT differently. My mom and grandmother both had to cut cane by hand in the 1920s. They didn't recommend it.

My mother a Granger, was in a family of 15,great grandfather came from England, cut cane with a cane knife with her other 12 brothers. Her father had her cooking at 8, standing on a milk crate to stir the pot, life was hard back then.

Welcome to the forum. You'll enjoy it, here. Lots to learn. Stop here and get schooled by those who've been there and done it.
Boy! do you have an interesting background. I would just love to sit and talk a while with you, and "revisit" your earlier days.
Have fun. The learning curve is long, and flavorful, and filled with fragrant smoke.
