I often avoid talking about my cat(s) just because I go a little overboard about them and I imagine to people who aren’t into cats, (although I can’t personally understand that) it’s a lot like when people show me pictures of their ugly little babies and tell me stories of what they threw up most recently and what color their poop is, etc., I tune out. But considering this is a cat thread, I’m going to talk about cats more often.

Our Lily is a family member and a topic of conversation between my wife and me. Unless we're with other human family members who have cats, I keep the gushing and endless details to myself. Even our vet isn't interested in my extensive explanations. LOL

Here's a pic of our late Grover and named after the great jazz saxophonist Grover Washington Jr. We didn't find him but, instead, came to our door wanting to be fed. When we put food out for him a few times, he insisted on pushing his way through the deck sliding door wanting to get in from the cold. Eventually we brought him inside, quickly made himself at home, and became a member of the family. He was a happy, loving cat although Lily didn't think much of him at the beginning and became resentful about the way that monopolized our attention. When we took him to the vet for a check-up and shots, the vet broke the news to us. Grover had either contracted or was born with feline leukemia, a killer condition and a death sentence, but cats were known to sometimes live on through the disease. And he did. Grover would run into the workshop and snuggle up next to me and nap. He loved being outdoors and would often sleep against our heads at night. He became my best cat friend and we just bonded in deep and wonderful way that I can't describe. Last Autumn, however, we began to notice that he began to cough and was loosing weight. By October, Grover began to stagger sideways when he walked, looked scraggly, and we knew. When we took him to the vet, he agreed with us the feline leukemia was killing him after being eight years old and he had to be put to sleep. We were just crushed by his passing and buried him near the entrance to the workshop. We had truly lost one of our best friends and a beloved family member. Lily has now taken over the house and quickly lost her sense of being in second place to become the cat that she always was inside...loving, peaceful, gentle. But I'll never forget Grover and I still miss his good-natured, happy, and carefree presence as my dear friend.

It’s impossible not to think back to my own similar experiences reading your post Russ. He sounds like he was a great kitty.

Isnt it weird that we have a million dog breeds and everyone is like Goldendoodle this, or Chihuahua mix that and if you ask someone what kind of cat they have it's just like "an orange one"?

We’re down to 4, we have a large stainless steel server on back porch. Wife bought a heating pad, puts in in the sink, cats pile in during cold weather as we have had the past 4 days, they love their heating pad!

Yeah, we're operating a diner complete with deck service here for two of the neighborhood cats. Can't come inside, though.

Our two neighborhood cats came by earlier for their Sunday breakfast. We don't mind feeding them although I'm sure they get fed at home. After being on their morning hunts they're probably hungry.

Molly has taken to sleeping behind me when I sit in this wing backed chair. She of course moved when I tried to take a picture.

He is a powerful being. Follows me when I am outside and is always at my side. Snow? No problem. He is there. He followed me home from the barn about ten years ago. I took him food and water every day for a year while he was in there. We have been inseparable since. Sleeps on my chest every night guarding me against evil spirits, bwahahaah. Some say he is a Norwegian Forest Cat. That is a breed I am told.

All Finns have blue eyes or so they seem to.

Hope they're not "thinning the herd" of the local songbirds. I'll bet 5 to 1 they are. Of course, that's what cats do. Our late cat Grover would hunt down birds, but there was always evidence. He also terrorized the chipmunks and thinned their numbers, too.

We had a cat who liked to hunt squirrels. We wouldn't necessarily have known, but at a certain spot in the gangway between our house and the house next door, he established a kind of midden of squirrel tails. We took to calling it Death Alley.

Our neighbor's cat Timmy snuck into the house before I could slide the deck door closed. I always feed him breakfast when he comes around in the morning, but now I'm afraid that he wants to move in! Our cat Lily isn't happy about it and Timmy's hiding out in the basement. Eventually he'll come up stairs and I'll let him out. I guess that he just wanted to come in and warm up while his humans aren't home to let him inside.

Timmy was sitting on my office chair when I went to the basement to check on him. Janet called him from the kitchen, shook the bag of crunchy cat food, and that got his attention. He went running up the stairs and then right out through the waiting open door. The ol' shake-the-crunchy-bag trick worked again.

Except I have to leave the flap open as they have not gotten past pushing it open. Since I am burning in a wood stove it is good to have a six inch square opening for ventilation. When temperatures drop below Zero (F) and all four cats are in I close it for the night. They have no business outside anyway when it is that cold.

Salem, current ruler of the castle. He liked to hide under a runner in the hallway of the last house we lived in. Now as I am preparing meals he comes alongside to help. He will rub on me until I go and sit in me recliner then will jump up and get in my face until I extend out the legs. He then will nestle between my legs for the rest of the night or until the wife goes to bed and then he wants to go with her. You can see by the look he's not happy getting his picture taken. Rebel 2001-2019 This was the bribe I needed to get the wife to move to AL when I was transferred for work in 2001. She said the deal was she would move with me on the condition she got an all grey cat.Rebel was a rescue from shelter in MS. And last Ley we have Li'l Bit 2005-2022. A stray kitten when I had an insurance office. Had to leave a trail of food outside under trucks and a walkway to lure into the office to catch her. She was the least affectionate of all. Probably because she was alone from early on.
