Good day. I’m reposting this question on this thread because my question may be more appropriate here: being a newbie to the pipe world I’m curious about various tobaccos. My question is this: has anyone tried the Gold Block? I ask because Smokingpipes is pushing this product fairly hard. Curious to know if it warrants the hype it’s getting and a review of this tobacco (from someone who’s tried it) would be appreciated please.

It's not too strong and a very fine cut.

Hello everyone. If I may add to one of my previous questions, and I apologize if this is the wrong thread, what are your top 3 tobaccos and why? Being new, I’ve been soaking up so much information on various tobaccos my head is literally spinning. Also, with so many varieties out there it’s hard to determine which ones are great, decent or crap. I realize I’m being very general as our taste buds differ and what I like may not concur with yours. With that in mind, I’m sure there must be some blends everyone is raving about (at least that’s the case in the cigar world ie. Opus, Padron, Liga Privada, Cuban Cohiba etc). Currently I’m at the aromatic phase moving towards English blends and beyond with an eye on S. Galwaith’s St. James, Sqh Leader and SPC Plum Pudding hoping this might give you a start point. Thank you and looking forward to your comments and suggestions.😁👊

Backwoods Cherry and Backwoods Buttered Rum (Dream Castle Tobacco Co.) They both smell great in the pouch. I got a bit of ‘heavy tongue’ from the Rum but no real bite. Seems a bit salty in flavor. Almost no retro-hale taste. The taste seems to disappear. Mild. Easy to light and stays lit well. Dottle quite damp. Overall, pretty tasteless. I would not buy again.
Mostly the same for the Cherry. Stays lit well. Mild. No bite but pretty tasteless and bland. Won’t be buying again.

Just tried a bowl of Mac Baran’s Plumcake and found it somewhat tasteless. To me, it was just bland. Also, from all the previous reviews I’ve read, just about everybody talks about smoking it slowly because of its strong tongue bite. I don’t consider myself a fast smoker but didn’t get any. Am I missing something about this blend?

I'm all about the Burley and cigars these days … lost my appetite for most straight Virginias and like the occasional Lat blend. The Burley must be "mostly" unadulterated with Glycerines and Glycols and devoid of artificial toppings.
1. Uhle's Blend 00 2. D&R Two Timer 3. Burley Legal (home blend)

Don’t waste your time looking for Frog Morton, if you are not aware of it, that is a discontinued blend that commands high prices.

Just had a bow, of Davidoffs Blue while golfing today and found it lack lustre and wanting. Has anyone else tried this blend? I’d appreciate your thoughts please. Being a cigar smoker moving into the pipe world I realize there’s a completely different art to smoking a pipe (slow and go). As my taste buds are slowly adapting to the nuances of pipe tobacco, I’d appreciate your insight on this matter. Thanks......

They require perfecting smoking techniques and sometimes years to fully enjoy. That being said, allow the tobacco to air for 30 minutes or so, then gravity fill your pipe with little tamping. Smoke slowly and retrohale for full effect.

Being a cigar smoker, I wonder if it's not a better idea for you to start on the full-flavored end of the pipe tobacco spectrum, and slowly work your way into the lighter blends with more nuanced flavors, like Virginia flakes and light aromatics? That's pretty much what I did; not because I was coming from cigars but probably because I had such a lousy palate that I needed the full-flavor blends to get any flavor at all haha. Take a look at something like this; this is a current favorite of mine (in the rich, full flavored category). www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/4298/hearth-home-magnum-opus

Very forgiving and little bite.

Gentlemen, thanks again for your insight and great suggestions above. I guess I’m gravitating towards aromatics because of the wonderful aroma. Having said that I have tried and enjoyed Mac Baran’s Scottish blend, Navy Flake and Dunhill’s 965. Perhaps I should focus on them for a while while until I refine my pipe palate. All the best!

I haven’t yet Paddy but will keep an eye out. Feeling like a kid at a candy store... so many different tobaccos to try and not enough time to try them all.

I think Carter Hall is one easily obtained over the counter, so it should be easy to get. I think it's cheap too. One of my favourites that I can't get this side of the pond.
