The word of the day is mélange. When most pipe smokers think "creating their own blend" they create a mélange from two or more different blends that are in their cellars. When I think "creating my own blend" I think taking the different component tobaccos and mixing them to create something personal. I have created two personal blends this way.
Instead of doing it myself, I talked to Jon David Cole at the Country Squire in Jackson,Ms. and explained what I was looking for. We then worked together to create two blends - Senior Chief and Lighthouse Keeper. They turned out to be similar but different because of the proportion of blending tobacco used. Both could be termed as crossover blends.
If you have a specific idea in mind, give Jon David a call and discuss it with him. He may even be able to point you to an existing blend which fits the flavor profile you are looking for.

One modified blend that I love is Semois infused with nocino for two days. Also enjoyed Golden Glow infused with the same, then home-pressed into a plug. I've pressed a few plugs of various Coniston/Cherry Cream Flake ratios and others seemed to really like them - 30g/20g is a pretty good ratio.
