Yes, you read that right.
I started this pipesmoking venture as a closet smoker a few months back. Hidden away in my backyard amongst a pair of non-judgemental german shorthair pointers I fumbled with a few briars and various tobacco blends. Awkward and cautious I poked and tamped and blew smoke away from the prodding eyes of the public. Like most, I figured out what I liked and what would be flushed down the toilet (1-Q). Confidence grew and I eventually felt less awkward in my habits. What started off as an early morning pipe and an after work smoke began to evolve into a "most of the day" smoke.
Now I charr a bowl while preparing my coffee. Smoke a bit before I leave for work. Smoke on my drive to work. Burn a bowl at lunch and proudly sport a briar on my drive home. Yes, there are looks of confusion and surprise from fellow commuters. Double-takes and smirks abound. I puff away and don't give a #$@%. The other day while driving home I ran across another fellow pipester. We shared a laugh, raised a briar and went on our merry ways.
My point is this....
Piping while driving has made me a better smoker in two ways.
1)I have finally reached that point where I don't really have to think about my breathing any more. I just smoke.
2) I just don't really care what others think while I'm doing it. "GROWTH".

Aren't we lucky? My pair of GSPs is also non-judgmental. As long as they get their daily dose of running and sniffing they don't care what I do. They even laugh at jokes they've heard a dozen times.

Yo des - I didn't need too much help learning to puff my pipes. But piping while driving has made me a better driver. Even traffic jams and road ragers don't bother me anymore.

I don't drive. But reading books while puffing has helped me. I pay attention to what I am reading ... and the rest falls into place.

A 4:30 AM bowl of commuter friendly Sterling Flake had apparently put me into a deep contemplative state this morning.

I think the same thing happened to me. Once I started driving and smoking I stopped thinking/worrying about every puff and just drove. Next thing I know I am halfway thru a bowl and was hooked. It sure makes driving more enjoyable and less stress.
I have train tracks that can stop traffic for 15 minutes. Before pipes these would get me irritable. Not anymore - "Sorry honey, stuck behind the train. Be home when the train is gone or my pipe is gone, whichever comes last." haha

I learned early on that pipe smoking really mediated my mood. It's hard to scream with a pipe in your mouth. And chicks dig pipe smokers...at least the interesting women do...lol.

As a trucker that covers many miles, I concur. The pipe really helps the miles roll away and helps you keep a proper perspective on the knuckleheads that you share the road with.

I was just being funny. People seem to think me older. I have always gotten along with people older than me, so maybe that's part of it. Anyway I am actually 40.

I've never yet tried to smoke a pipe while driving, but I doubt I will. I don't like stinking up the car. That said, I'd be interested to see if it would make me a better driver...or a better pipe smoker.
I do like the growth you've encountered by not caring what people think...I'd like to grow in that way too. I care too much in some ways...in other ways, not at all.

I only smoke in my work truck. I notice I drive slower when I am smoking and tend to smoke more on the way to work that I do on the way home. I don't try and pack my pipe or try my first light while driving. But do tamp and relight.

I used to smoke when I drove the green valley loop. I had time to on my drive between Tucson and green valley 4 times a day. I’m in town now so it’s short hops. I miss it sometimes but not the mileage I was putting on my car.

That which must be endured can be endured best with a pipe.

No fire in my vehicle. My asthmatic wife can't tolerate smoke. After taking her to the ER for an oxygen treatment, a couple times, I get kinda protective.
