I use rum on a pipe cleaner. It's the shank that needs it.

Wouldn’t pipe sweetener do the trick? It’s cheaper then booze.

Like Tatto would say The Shank, Ron, The Shank Ron. I have a small brass brush sized for 22s, dipped in whatever floats your boat and then I put used coffee grounds and let it sit. Crude but it works.

Years ago, in the mid-'70's if I remember correctly, I had a guy in a tobacco shop in Dodge City, KS tell me that smoking straight Latakia would cure a sour pipe. It worked. This was back when I didn't understand the importance of pipe cleaners. From what I've been told, that guy was likely Joe Lankford, of SPC fame. It may just be true, he does know a thing or two about Latakia.

Clean them after every smoke and you'll never need to sweeten them.

I use 80 proof brandy (not flavored). But I used it the first time because that's what I had available. Didn't like drinking it, so it was just setting in the cabinet for a few years - so I started using it to clean/sweeten pipes. It worked so I kept using it. Just finished cleaning/sweetening 11 pipes - mostly ones I purchased on eBay. I clean the shank with a brush and/or pipe cleaner dipped in brandy. Clean the bowls, then stuff them full of cotton balls and soak with brandy. Leave for 24 hours adding brandy as it evaporates. (A syringe is handy.) Remove cotton balls and wipe bowl with rolled paper towel. It made a very noticeable difference in 2 I did several months ago.

Bare briar. I ream out any cake on eBay pipes. I was asking for my own pipes not the state pipes my pipes have cake built up in them they get reamed and maintained regularly but none the less they have cake. My question was directed more at my own pipes

Go out and buy some a few Navel oranges. Peel one and jam the thick, oily rind into the tobacco chamber of the pipe(s) you want to freshen. Make sure the oily rind faces the walls of the tobacco hole. Leave that citrus rind in the pipe(s) until it dries out, slightly. This might take a day or two. The citrus oils from the rind will seep out and refresh your pipes. The rind will be easy to pick out of the bowl as it starts to day out and shrink.
Make sure you start the citrus process with a cleaned pipe and and especially a clean stem.
Citrus oils mixed with the scent of tobacco, is great!
Throw some orange peels into your tobacco pouch or humidor to maintain the correct humidity for your stored tobacco.

Swab out the bowl and stem with RUM EXTRACT.... that you can buy in any large food store, in the aisle for baking supplies, cake mixes, spices, etc.. Mccormick sells this stuff in small bottles and it's used to flavor cakes. Dip a pipe cleaner in this, and swab away. Vanilla extract, works, too.

It's a lot more expensive.

It's not better...it's just an alternative.
I, and maybe others who don't drink, would rather spend less than a few bucks for a bottle of cheap Rum Extract, rather than spending a lot more money for a decent drinking Rum, especially if the real McCoy is not kept in the home-bar or liquor cabinet. I, and maybe others don't drink, so, the alternative option works for me. In addition, the little extract bottles fit iton a tobacco pouch, or carry cases for pipes.
But, use whatever you got.

The acidity in the coffee is just as effective. Just make sure you let it sit for a few days. Having said that I’d prefer using orange peels as it’s easier to pick out then coffee grounds.
