Tomorrow I start my journey as a mentor to a new pipe smoker. I've been working with a studio photographer this holiday season and a few weeks ago, she mentioned that she loved the smell of pipes. Her husband and I have become friendly over a discussion of bourbon and a couple of side projects for me, also mentioned he liked the smell of pipes. Beau said he tried a pipe but just couldn't get it to stay lit. As he's not charging me for the work he is doing on my project, I decided to reciprocate by teaching him about pipe smoking.
I have cleaned and polished a Bjarne pipe I had in a box of estate pipes as a good starter pipe for him. I'm also giving him a pouch of Carter Hall and a sample of a winter blend I like, pipe cleaners and a tamper. I'll probably give him a disposable pipe lighter also.
I thought about giving him some Lane 1-Q, but since I don't smoke it, I don't have any. Once i educate him on packing his pipe and proper puffing technique, I figure this will give him the chance to succeed.

Wish I had a mentor when I started out, especially when it comes to packing a pipe properly. Live and learn......

First update. What I taught Beau yesterday was that if you are sitting on a covered patio and it's raining, your tobacco will absorb moisture and go out more often. That being said, we got in about a half hour smoke and my pipe actually went out more than his. That was because my pipe tobacco got wet while I was walking from my truck to his patio.
Still, it wasn't bad for the first time. He smoked a bowl Imperial Nougat and other than inhaling one time, did okay. He was worried about the pipe going out because he is an occasional cigar smoker and has had bad experiences with a cigar going out and then relighting it after it sat for 20 or 30 minutes. My explanation was the saliva from your mouth is absorbed into the cigar tobacco and can make the cigar taste bad if it sits too long. With a pipe any moisture stays in the pipe stem and all you have to do is swab it out with a pipe cleaner.
