Don't Call It a Cult, by Sarah Berman. Keith Raniere's NXIVM MLM scam and misogyny cult. I read a lot about cults and "new religious movements," but don't know much about this one, except that women came out saying that he branded them with his initials in the nether regions. Humans are a curious bunch. I never heard about this story. He certainly puts the scum in scumbag. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keith_RaniereIt didn't seem to be a big news story at the time and the book I'm reading is the first in-depth coverage I have seen.

It looks like the timeline of his prosecution was about the same time that Epstein, and Harvey Weinstein was all over the news… them scumbags probably overshadowed his scumbaggery.
In the Wikipedia are some links to some expose’s on Discovery and HBO of that guy.

I'll be starting Paradise Lost, soon, oddly enough. You have seen the etchings by Gustave Dorè? which should accompany this reading? If not, try the library. It is worth the time.

Just finished “The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl”. I found out a lot of things about the region I grew up in and gained more insight into what my great grandparents and grandparents went through. It helps explain some of their quirks and habits and helped me understand my folks a bit more. Excellent read.

I saw a new Matthew Pearl at the e-library and got on the waitlist. I love his historical fiction, but it turns out this one is non-fiction: The Taking of Jemima Boone. I can't wait to dive in.

That's an exciting story. Enjoy! There's a Zane Grey book that's the true story of his heroic aunt that I highly recommend. I think it was his first book.

I haven't had a chance to crack it open yet. My Papa read every Zane Grey ever. I discovered Zane Grey late in life. I've probably read about 20. I love his descriptions of the old west, but there is always enough romance thrown in to make them just short of "Bodice Rippers". The one about his aunt was different. Set in Tennessee I think during the Indian raids. Betty Zane I think.

John Le Carre, The Pigeon Tunnel. These are extracts from his life, much of which formed the basis of many of his novels.

Last night I started American Messiahs: False Prophets of a Damned Nation by Adam Morris, 2019. New religious movements from the Revolution to People's Temple. I don't know why he stopped at Jim Jones, but he features some folks of whom I was unaware. It's right up my alley so far.

The Oxford Book of Villains edited by John Mortimer, author of the "Rumpole" series of novels. A practicing Criminal Barrister and prolific writer of crime.
An essay on the nature of evil and villainy followed by famous villains in literature. Eventually moving on to famous historical villains.

Cannot have crime without Villains. No Villains means no Pie and a Pint for Old Horace at luncheon. No bottle of Chateau Thames Embankment from Pomeroy's.

just started The Selected Poems of Wendell Berry, not generally a huge poetry fan but saw a youtube video with one of his pieces in it and decided to give it a shot.

Wendell has found a lot of readers, for a poet, especially.

Finished Milton. It's an intense read and he runs on a bit in places, but it's thought-provoking, too, which is always good. Mr. Milton was not a stereotypical Puritan.
