Hey everyone, I'm new here. Been a fairly successful pipe smoker over about twenty-five years, though still have difficulty smoking briars all the way to the bottom to carbonize the bowl. Have a Meerschaum in calabash shape but have had most success smoking corncob pipes. Now I've heard about Morta and was wondering if any could direct me to more info or just start a discussion here.
So what's the deal with Morta?

I have 3 morta pipes. Don't know of any cons. Maybe that after a few bowls they are as good as they are ever going to be, while a Peterson with a thousand bowls is maybe a little bit better. But then you can enjoy it from the first bowl. Edit: I read the article and I don't understand why he says that the blocks are small. My pipes are huge. Of course, ones a Becker that was $565 new, and the other is a Davorin that was $475. The Don Warren morta pot is smaller, but not tiny. I believe it was $160. I highly recommend Don Warren pipes.

I own seven Morta pipes, six are Moretti and one from Askwith. There is no downside to these pipes, they smoke drier and cooler than briar pipes. They do not need a long break in period. For the money Moretti is the best, but Demoric Davorin (sp) is a little bit more high end and costly. Both make outstanding pipes.

So what's the deal with Morta? Many smokers don't smoke to the bottom of the chamber so carbonizing a chamber's heel isn't necessary. Your success with cobs is likely due to the false bottom beneath the airway giving you more room to smoke. A pipe is little more than a straw that you are drawing smoke through so pipe material isn't going to replace technique. Try drying your tobacco longer and packing lighter if the bottom of the chamber is your goal. That being said, I find no difference in smoking properties of briar, cob, meer, or morta.

2 Becker Mortas, wife said treat yourself one year, over 1000$ of pipes, they are light, smoke good, but not that good, I like my Meers better, one carbon dated over 5000 yrs old.. they do get hot, but not unreasonably hot, you can smoke them back to back hard.

I bought a morta pipe on eBay, for about $60. It smokes like a briar or meer. I haven't smoked it in a while, mainly because it is really big and heavy.

Some of the pipes on eBay are actually Chinese oak or something dyed black. I bought one just to see. It smokes better than other Chinese pipes I've tried, but not that great. They put on Norwegian names on them and claim that they are made in Ukraine or somewhere else that has a good reputation. It's not likely that you got a real morta pipe for $60. But I may be wrong.

I purcahsed Morta pipes for less than 60 dollars from Poland. There is a long thread in the Patch archives concerning these finds and the spirited conversations that followed (In the link below). After a long debate, verifications and doing more research, I took the pipe to the KS pipe show where a few carvers, more familair with Morta, identified the pipes as being Morta; young Morta, maybe not the best grade, but Morta. The pipes I bought are a bit crude, require filters but smoke decently enough. A Morta pipe less crudely constructed, with higher quality Morta etc. would be better, though I have no complaints, especially at the pipes' price point. They have filled in for cobs and briars that have been dedicated to new blends and the occasional aromatic. Ron is correct in that the vast majority of Morta pipes are more expensive than sixty dollars. Morta is also noticably lighter than Briar. Trifecta is be very very suspicious of Chinese "Morta" pipes that are often sold on eBay etc. . One example is the Ukraine OLEG pipes sold by Chinese eBayers: www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Ukraine-OLEG-Morta-Bog-oak-Tobacco-Pipe-Handmade-Blowfish/224225063961?hash=item3434daf419:g:vRIAAOSwQ6Zfpk6OInexpensive Morta link: thebriarpatchforum.com/thread/7343/inexpensive-morta-pipesThe thread contains some repeated details and a few who take issue. However, if one reads through the thread one will find useful information.

Mr Brog generally makes a good pipe. If it's really a Mr Brog it's probably morta, but certainly not the best morta. That's really cheap.

I remember the year Paolo debuted his sandblasted Morta pipes in Chicago years ago. Nobody had heard or seen this material before and a buzz went through the show like a wildfire. I've only seen that happen one other time with something where it wasn't just about the price and that was with his pencil shank Spaghettio design.

Welcome from Northern California. I own two Davorin Davoric Mortas and they smoke wonderfully. Both are large pipes. One is of Black Morta, the other Copper (color). I compare them in smoking quality to my Meerschaums. They don't ghost and they stay dry.

Interesting. Made in Ukraine and shipped from China. That should instill confidence.

It’s wood usually oak that was trapped in a bog, in the States we call it a swamp for thousands of years. The darker the color the older it is, I have a couple that date over 5 thousands years old. Very light and from what I understand hard to cut , brittle while working it.

I have two Morta pipes, both are short Rhodesian shapes. When a year or so old, one suddenly developed a fatal crack across the bowl, causing the front of the bowl to fall off, not while smoking! There was no abuse causing the crack and the pipe maker replaced the pipe, agreeing that it was an undetected flaw in the block. He said that it rarely happens but is not unheard of. I find them good smokers but not better than briar, Meer, or cob.

I have a morta tomato in the rack, fifteen years old (give or take) never had a problem, broke in fast and smokes well. I think I'd have one made by a reputable carver to avoid the "replicas" but that's just my opinion. I can't think of any cons , good luck.

I have a couple. An Il Ducca and an unnamed lovat that I bought from a forum member a few years back. They are dry. Neutral. Never accumulates carbon. What's not to like?
