In spite of the shelters we set up and the food we put out, we found 2 frozen birds this morning. Bummer. Life is hard and Mother Nature is a bitch. Found 3 more frozen sparrows this afternoon. 😢

Found 3 more frozen sparrows this afternoon. 😢 That's sad but, with this this unseasonal/ unordinary weather we're having here I reckon it's to be expected.
On another note, I managed to get the the market today to pick up my meds to find empty shelves, I asked a clerk, was it because of the
lack of deliveries because of the snow and ice and she told me it was and that many people came in to stock up because of the winter conditions. I said to her, "Just unbelievable, a little snow falls and everyone thinks it's the Apocalypse!" She agreed and we both shook our heads.

This was as close to an apocalypse as I ever want to get. A little snow? Our total ended up at 17 inches. I still can't leave my house.

States that get snow on a regular basis might see weeks of it piled up all around, not a few days and gone.

Yes, but he wouldn't be leaving the house for this: He'd be leaving for this:

And what would happen if Buffalo got a month of 105 degree days and 92 degree nights like we do?

"Peaches" was a difficult birth. She was a late delivery and got stuck in the birth canal about a third of the way out. We brought mama cow into the barn and into our one pen. It took three of us and a come-along to get "Peaches" out. She was a large heiffer owing to her being a late delivery and it was mama cows first calf. Anyway, she was stretched pretty good in delivery and could not stand on her own. Her mama immediately rejected her. It was this month and plenty cold. So, we put her in a cart and took her into the house, parking the cart next to the wood stove. Toweled her off and went to bed. SHe balled a little but slept. I have her a bottle milk replacer with colostrum to tide her over to morning. Next morning we took her back to mama. She could not stand without assistance and mama did not like that. She kept rejecting her. Did not look good for Peaches. So, following advice of a neighbor, we added my nephew's dog to the pen. Mama Cow took one look at the dog, put her head down and charged. Dog turned self into a pancake. Mama then chased dog around pen. We let dog out. Mama calmed down and them let Peaches start suckling. The experience had rebooted her maternal instinct to protect and accept her calf. Peaches grew to be a great mama cow herself and did well for me before being sold to that neighbor.
Sometimes intervention is needed.
I agree that is best just to towel off in cold weather and leave them be. A nice barn with straw bedding helps.

It’s not the snow. That can be problematic of course, and the ice, but it’s the temperatures. For the most part, except for maybe the Panhandle, Texas houses are just not engineered for intense cold. The northern climes are used to it and build accordingly. Texans just don’t plan on sub-zero temps, especially not when they hang around for days and nights seemingly on end.

Yeah, our cold weather is usually just a drive-by, not a full on mafia takeover.

The chicken ranchers do it right...no frosted birds for this Canuck! Our co-op didn't shut down the power because of all of the huge chicken farms in the eastern part of the county. Also, we're not part of ERCOT, so that helped too.

I am just glad that solar panels and windmills will save us from future freezes.

I am just glad the whole grid is controlled by a computer program from coast to coast. It was explained to me some years back that the west had their grid, the east had theirs and sometime in the 40’s? Texas produced so much oil, they made their own grid. I cannot attest that is true, or that over time they all interconnected, just the way I thought it worked.

Correct, Texas is it's own grid, and who and what's to blame for it almost crashing quickly becomes political.

I'm just glad. Just got back from Walmart. Got everything except milk. They only had 3 quarts of goats milk, and we left it in case anyone needed it.

So I heated some leftovers and went to the back room, where my computer is. There was a big bushy tail going out the cat door. A big bushy striped tail. Uh oh.
I watched for a bit and Mr. Raccoon stuck his head inside and looked at me. This is not good.

I saw that picture. Pretty sure raccoons can't afford Dunhills, so it had to be stolen.
