The amount of money spent on the space program since Kennedy is less than the government wasted this week. At least half of everything spent on "government research" is wasted. It is worth a few cents of my tax dollars to learn something new about the universe. |

Not only is exploration part of our nature, it's the reason we've been such a successful species (which, of course, is why it's part of our nature... natural selection and all that).
The money spent on understanding our surroundings is an investment in humanity as a whole. A day will come when we - maybe not you and I, but our species - will need that knowledge, and it can't be acquired overnight, so waiting till then might be a bad idea.
