Considering the death toll of NYC thanks to political malfeasance, and the rank idiocy of those in charge, stupid people, continue to be stupid people. www.pepper-spray-store.com/pages/new-york-laws#:~:text=Pepper%20spray%20is%20LEGAL%20to,legally%20shipped%2Fcarried%2Fused. Last time I checked, walking within 6 feet of someone is not cause for triggering less than lethal violence. But then again, I would not trust a jury in NYC to come to a reasonable decision. Just another reason to avoid the hellhole.

I worked there for years as did my dad and would never describe it as a hellhole. Never been in a fight there, never got shot, robbed or anything there. Not saying it’s Utopia but a hellhole, it isn’t. Just like any city, it’s got it’s good parts and it’s bad. But show me somewhere that doesnt As far as NY state, I’ve had a cabin there 10 years and have worked there too. Never a single problem and maybe some of the more humble people I’ve met (once you get way upstate)

My daughter and son both went to NYC in the last few years.
Both had negative experiences... daughter saw a rat in a restaurant while eatin pizza.
Son said that doorway piss was pretty much a regular occurrence.
And neither one was in the ghetto.
I have no desire to visit the place, no problem with me that you guys like it.
😉
My dad’s side came over before there was a NYC, on my mom’s side they were here before the white man came, so there is no familial connection to the city.

The Navy told us if the ship went down and we could see the lights of the NYC metroplex it was not that far to swim to England. My middle brother lives in Manhattan he likes it.

I worked there for years. Grew up 15 mins from Manhattan. It's a city. A nice one at that, for the most part. I worked everywhere from Harlem, to midtown, to downtown, Queens, Brooklyn, LI, Bronx. Never once any remote issue. I still say what you "see" online, isn't what you "get". My ancestors on my father's side were the aliens who built the pyramids, and my mother's side came from the year 3945.

I pretty much don’t like any of the major cities. Generally they are all a disappointment. LA, SF, Chicago, ABQ, San Diego, Detroit, Denver, are all cities that I have visited in the last year and they all pretty much sucked.
Even though I live in the greater Phoenix area, I rarely go to Phoenix outside of work. The outlying towns and smaller towns are much more agreeable to me.
Glad you like NYC.... rock on.

City life is different than country life...I've lived half my life in both places..The trick is just to adjust to your environment..Folks in both places are just people trying to get by in a complicated world..

I'm friends with the farmers. I can also get by with city folk just fine. I try to find redeeming value in most locales and cultures. I enjoy all that life has to offer.

I grew up in Houston. All of the good things about Houston when I was a kid were replaced by new things, new people, lots of new people. The woods were all cut down, the surrounding farms were paved, and idiots took over the government. I'm sure that if you were born in New York or went there very young, it can be a great place. I personally need more elbow room. And upstate is too cold for me. Just having that many people crammed together would make it a hell hole for me.

If all you're looking for is the bad, you're bound to find it. And believe me, there is as much of it in small town USA there is in our cities. There are good people everywhere. Just look for them.

Grew up in Sullivan County New York. That was the play ground for those that lived in the city. Never had a problem with them. There are a lot of good hard working people in the city.
The media only talks about the negative. Listen to Don Henleys " Dirty Laundry". Because it is their job to get reactions that some groups want and need.
As for the Corona thing it is a problem they have caused. They feel they can do what they want when they want to without being concerned with the end result.
Glad I don't live there any more.

Never thought I’d be putting in a good word for NYC but kinda feel obligated. I’m a dyed-in-the-wool ruralist but thru the 70s I was in NYC reasonably often for business and at least once or twice for pleasure. Never had the slightest problem or unpleasantness. On the contrary, it seemed that NYC was a small town that had gotten big, but still lots of friendly, helpful people. Took my son there when he was eight and we had a ball. (He got to see Rex Harrison in MY FAIR LADY.) I think if you go somewhere expecting it to be awful it WILL be awful. Expect to find Bad People, and you will succeed in finding them. I can’t speak for NYC now. But then it was a place I enjoyed very much.

I visited Manhattan New York multiple times around 2010-2013 or so. I really enjoyed the city. It looks like the place is headed somewhere south of the 1970s which is sad to see.

Glad that people have fond memories of NYC but I posted this link to a friend that has lived there all his life and the city of 10, 15, 20 years ago is no longer the case, and agrees with my assessment. He would be the first to state that it is a cesspool of failure.
Caring for his parents takes front and center, then he is gone.
YMMV.
