My fault - I get a thought in my mind and run with it. My thoughts wandered from the reservoir to the entire mortise. (I've got pipe-cleaning on my mind at the moment )

I'm thinking about getting a new Peterson system pipe. My question is, what is a spigot pipe? I would like a decent size bowl, any suggestions? Ron?

The spigots aren't system pipes. The Pub Pipes have large bowls and the full System. The System Standard pipes are a little cheaper and they come in all sizes.

Great story about your pipe...I am tempted to get a fishtail replacement for my p-lip. I'm not a fan.

To answer your question, the Spigot has an Army Mount, usually nickel or silver and what makes the Spigot a Spigot is the addition of a silver or nicker adornment at the part of the stem that enters into the shank. Here is a photo of a 307. If you are seeking a decent size bowl, look for: 302, 306, 307, 312, B42 and XL315.

There is a line of System Spigot, though. I have seen pictures of spigots with the stem extension, but when it comes to buying one they all are regular length stems. I have 2 spigots that are not system pipes. One is a very high end. I have looked at the so-called System Spigots and they don't have the extension and believe me that extra piece makes a world of difference.

Yeah, I would wait until I was in Ireland to get that done. Someone mentioned earlier about the p-lip messing with the roof of their mouth. I've never given it much thought, other than for me it reduces tongue bite, so last night I grabbed my favorite p-lip and was conscious of what was going on. When you draw on a p-lip, it draws it over your tongue, not up to the roof of your mouth, although certainly some smoke will drift there. The fact that the hole is in the top of the stem doesn't mean the smoke goes up to the roof of your mouth as it would with a fishtail, unless you have some sort of suction mutation in the roof of your mouth. In certain Petersons I love the p-lip, while in others I prefer the fishtail. Again, haven't given it much thought, but will try to pay more attention to the details.

I'm not sure how else to explain it. Look at a regular System pipe and see how deep the end of the stem goes into the shank. Then look at the Deluxe System and see how deep the extension reaches. The spigot extension doesn't reach as far into the shank as the regular System. The tip of the stem should reach past the draft hole for the best performance. I'm thinking about adding a metal tube extension to my regular System pipes. I already did it to one of them with great results.

Well, after much debate and deciding on how much money I wanted to spend, I pulled the trigger on Peterson Deluxe System 20s Sandblast Tobacco Pipe PLIP. May not be as big as I would have liked but I think it will suit me just fine.

Nice! But pics or it didn't happen. Very nice, Kevin. I used to think I didn't like that gap between the stem and the shank, till I saw one in person. Somehow, it works. It looks really nice.

Just like mine except for the finish. You know I love mine. They make a larger one in the same shape, but good luck finding one. I am liking the bowl size fine. I have bigger pipes that I don't smoke much anymore. Including a WDC Wellington Jumbo that's an exact copy of the Peterson System, P-lip and all.

I had a 20S just like yours, except hallmarked 1976 and the blast had a lot of dark reddish-brown in it. Peterson can do a good job on sandblasts, but you have to look closely, as they are all over the board. Some of the best current ones I'm seeing are NOT PSB, so I wouldn't pay the premium for that designation.

Well, received the new pipe damaged. Have contacted the seller about a replacement. Will probably either be a 2s or 20fb since other is out of stock.

Had it happen a couple months ago, but, luckily, the seller noticed the damage when they were prepping it for shipping, so I was able to go with something else without having to wait for two-way shipping.

Very nice, Kevin. I used to think I didn't like that gap between the stem and the shank, till I saw one in person. Somehow, it works. It looks really nice. Same here. Sometimes I get one where the stem is wider than the shank, and if the gap ever did close, it would look horrible.
