Grandpa ran a motel & cafe, so dad learned from him and I learned from both of them. My Scoutmaster had been SF working with the Montagnards during Korea, so we learned a lot about trapping, gigging, and cooking things that many people don't consider food. I’m sure your Scoutmaster had some very interesting stories. Hope he was willing to share them with you.

I’m sure your Scoutmaster had some very interesting stories. Hope he was willing to share them with you. There was a lot of stuff he would rather have not remembered. He carried a lot of weight from his time in SF, and was a widower. About the only thing I remember him sharing about it was training in HTH combat with a 5' tall Asian guy who had his fingers surgically made the same length so he could "spearhand" people more effectively. We were a poorly-disciplined lot, but he poured his heart and soul into us Scouts. The guy wore cowboy boots (without socks) year-round, and rolled his own cigarettes. The highest-ranking Scout in whatever tent he slept in was expected to be up at dawn making a pot of coffee. When Mr. G stuck his hand out of the tent, he fully expected to immediately receive a full cup of hot, black coffee

Reminds me of an old crusty SSG I once had. Bit of an alcoholic but everyone looked out for him.

Italians and food! My expertise in Italian food is largely in the eating of it, but I do make a pretty good pasta sauce. My 2d wife was Italian and we had T’Giving, Xmas, and Easter in her mom’s house. Seventy-‘leven cousins, aunts, uncles, grandmas, etc. and a table loaded with enough food for Garibaldi’s armies. The food, the wine, the arm-waving, the arguments— all wonderful. Wonderful people, wonderful food. Enough memories for a lifetime. I’m still working off the calories!

I put a chicken sub from Walmart in the toaster oven tonight. Does that count as cooking? My sister used to complain about how hard she worked to make a 'home cooked meal' when she stuck a Stouffer's lasagna in the oven, or opened a can of something and made Kraft macaroni & cheese. I'm not one to argue with her, so if that counted as cooking then toasting a sandwich counts, too

My Scoutmaster was the best. On my test for cooking merit badge I made chocolate pudding and the wind was blowing like crazy. It got dust in it and he ate it, grit and all.
