I missed this thread. Sorry I’m late to the party. I’ve done similar kinds of ‘rearrangment’ in the past. It will be a great adventure and I wish you all the best in every way. If you’re in Wyoming we’ll be neighbors, more or less. Got a great front deck for smokin’ and drinkin’ and even got an RV hookup for visitors. Be sure you keep us in the loop as the adventure unfolds. Vaya con Dios.

Best wishes on your upcoming changes. This week, I've applied for a new career after 25 years and am feeling that stress so I understand completely. I’m leaving my company next week after 10 years with them. Stressed and excited at the same time. Going to take a month off before starting the next gig though. Need to recharge all the batteries I don't know how I missed this either...

I have an offer to come ride for an outfit in Moab, Utah. I think the desert will be a welcome change after so many years in the NW. It will take us to the end of April to get everything buttoned up and ready to pull out of here, but I’m relieved to at least have a destination. I appreciate all of the kind thoughts and prayers from my friends on here during this turbulent time.
On another related note, the Dr has ruled out my heart as the offending culprit in my health battle. The heart trouble was caused by extreme high blood pressure and the high blood pressure turns out was caused by a problem in my kidneys. I spent two years in the jungles of Papua New Guinea several years ago and got malaria twice. Apparently malaria attacks the kidneys and the kidneys have a large part to play in blood pressure. So the tests continue but this is a lot better prognosis to me

Dewayne, I am fairy certain you will enjoy Utah and especially the Moab area.
I do not recall what you wear but you may want to invest in a wide brim straw hat. Here in NM, summer time, I wear a "Gus" which has a brim almost Mexican Sombrero size. ABout six inches of brim. You will need the shade.

It’s my absolute favorite of all his books. One of the first books in my personal library! What a great adventure! It was my dad's (along with several cloth-bound Hardy Boys [and other] adventures). The only one I still have is a 1934 ex-library copy of Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Twice-told Tales." Sorry to hear about the malaria, brother. I had an Anthropology professor who was a missionary in Tonga and Papua New Guinea for most of the 1980's. Poor guy had a host of ongoing health issues from parasites and suchlike.

Glad to hear things are looking a little better, Dewayne. Kidney trouble might be no bargain, but ticker trouble definitely isn't.

Good coverage for the desert. Your hat has more crown than mine which is good for heat. Whence did yours come?

Mostly I wear this 100% beaver made for me by Rand’s Hatters. It’s got a 4” brim. When things get real hot, I soak it down and the evaporation carries the heat away. Straw hats have always made my head itch You all have heard so much about Shweetie, this is Shweetie the evening of our 30 year anniversary last week. She has asked me to teach her the Wrangling business so she can be my partner in that too for the rest of our days.

John, it's a "Sunbody." Outfit in Texas sells 'em. Don't have the URL handy, sorry. Should be easy to find.

^^^^ Great photo that!!!
In summer I used to wear only beaver felt hats with a very tall crown. Wetting as you say. Summer heat in the desert forced a change. Maybe the elevation, too. What ever works to keep in the shade.

That is a good looking couple, there!
Moab gets pretty hot, and can be a busy place with the off-roading/ sightseeing crowds... (for being as remote as it is).

I've had some fantastic times in Moab but the locals are a little "different". When it gets hot, head up into the La Sal range ... beautiful country.

URL is literally sunbody.com and their hats are made from Mexican and Guatemalan palm leaves. I have several Sunbody hats. They are not lightweight hats. The palm in them is sturdy and pretty heavy. They can also be wetted down for some cooling when it gets really hot. They should not be confused with cheapy straws.

I cowboyed in the Flint Hills of Kansas a few years ago, and a buddy I rode with wore the Sunbody hats. He was a smaller type feller, but one of the toughest guys I ever knew. He liked the big 6” brims. They fit his outsized personality...and big temper 😆

The Flint Hills.... I lived near Strong City Kansas in 1977-78. One of the best rodeo’s I have ever attended. I was in Americus, a tiny town outside of Emporia. Most of my riding was on ranches outside of Olpe, KS and one big roundup outside of Council Grove, KS. That bluestem country sure does fatten livestock up nice. I’ve been to the Strong City Rodeo. You’re right, it was a good one.

Dewayne. If you don’t mind me asking. Maybe I may have missed it here or elsewhere on the Patch. But where did you finally park your boots? You had mentioned Moab here on this thread. But your recent posts mention the Sangre de Christos. Which is SE Colorado, NE New Mexico?

But your recent posts mention the Sangre de Christos. Which is SE Colorado, NE New Mexico? I was 2 days on the road to Moab, and called to let the ranch know I would be in that evening, when the owner informed me she had already given the promised position to someone else. So we kept driving. Made some calls from the truck, and landed a job as a ranch hand on the Saguache Creek Ranch out of Saguache, CO
