I worked with a survivor, helped him sometimes when he had a lot of work, I was young and got to know him quite well. The only thing he mentioned to me was nothing to eat was in camp no food, he was always hungry, When he took out his bag lunch he looked at it like he couldn’t believe his eyes. Good man Good American.

I had no idea about this, although it certainly makes sense. I suspect, without evidence, that it might have been easier to acquire a pipe and tobacco (or keep what you had) after being captured by the Germans. It was a normal thing for soldiers on both sides in the European theatre to smoke pipes...and psychologically, the Germans seemed to be less interested in destroying a POW's emotional stability than was encountered in the Pacific.
