Many members here achieved the position of "manager" in their careers. They supervised, directed, governed and otherwise controlled employees (a common noun meaning fitulaters, fixtures, fornaces, fornicators and such) to some worthwhile end. My question is, at what point in that career did you realize you were more of a zoo keeper than business manager? If you have not had that experience please ignore the question. I work in an upper management position in the construction industry. I have always understood that we are zoo keepers. Working with multiple trades is a real menagerie of personalities and behaviors. Each trade is its own independent culture, and each company within has another independent culture. There is a lot of personality management and a lot of hand holding. But it is rewarding to work with a myriad of people to create something lasting and useful.

I have only half of what it takes to be any ones manager. I often show management my skills to be a manager but lack in so many facets. I hate, really hate working for someone else anyone else. I do have managers I like and have had managers I have loved and despised. I often tell my daughter to 'work hard for her dreams or she will end up working hard for someone else's. I recognize that in every thing that we do in society we have to work for someone eventually be it ourselves or another but the idea is distasteful to me.

11 more working days until I don't give a rip. That was my feeling on the last day right up until I walked out the door...at that point, my mind went blank and has been in that state ever since. Bliss.
