Great Caesar's Ghost!
I've been lusting after an MS pipe for about a year, but they were always out of stock. I put myself on the waitlist. I just checked my email again after maybe an hour, and there was the announcement I'd been waiting for. I shakily clicked the link on the one I wanted, and...Out of Stock.
That's how that went.
Anyone else experience this roller coaster today?

I got that email too, hadn't had a chance to check the link yet
Edit, the Special Dark Sandblast is still in stock, 47 of them, if you're interested

Often wondered why they advertise something that they don't have...makes no damn sense to me.

I was lucky enough to acquire one from Sparks that he didn't care for. I love the pipe and feel lucky to have this.

Heh. The email arrived just as I was sitting down to check email. Sheer dumb luck. At the time, the page said they had 34 in stock.

Hope you're able to get one from the next batch. With the COVID thing letting up, I kinda think their supply will start to even out. As I understand, production was hit pretty hard by the lockdown.

As of this morning, they still had 8 in stock. Maybe you were looking at the wrong one?

Is this from that company that Sparks mentioned here some time ago?

I received the same email too. There are two sizes of this pipe. I prefer the smaller of the two, since it’s closer to Bing’s pipe size that he smoked. It’s 1-1/2” in height compared to the 2” height of the other size. 7-1/4” length vs. 7-1/2” as well I believe.
I had a larger one, but traded it away last year as I didn’t like the larger sized bowl.

How heavy are they? I'd figure just from the length that they wouldn't be the easiest to carry in the mouth.

The larger of the two was challenging to hold in my mouth, but doable. I think the Standard one will be easier. Lots of stem to work with though!

I prefer the smaller of the two... I completely agree. I saw someone in a photo with the large one and I thought it just looked outsized. I much prefer the standard.

Yessir. I bought the “special” which was the larger. I passed it off to Papipeguy. Was too big for me. I ordered a standard today. The dark sandblast.

I visited their website and find interesting that they specialize in only one specific shape. Is there a particular reason to this?

Merchant Service became well known, specifically for their shape now most often referred to as "The Bing". Bing Crosby was a Merchant Service spokesperson, and was known to be very fond of the brand. I think resurrecting that shape was the primary motivation of the new Merchant Service company.

I ordered a special dark sandblast to try out. I'm trying to cut down on the homeless pipe population.

I visited their website and find interesting that they specialize in only one specific shape. Is there a particular reason to this? Back in October of 2019 as they were launching these pipes, one of the fellows involved was corresponding with me and had this to say….it may answer your question. “Final word about our pipes. I'm sure you know that the originals, the ones Crosby had access to, were not handmade, artisanal pipes. They go for hundreds on ebay due to their association with Crosby, their rarity and nothing more. You can find several artisans to make one for you. Again big bucks. We tried to come up with a re-issue that is, as was the original, reasonably priced. But in addition, we spent a lot of time on the design, sourcing old, dry wood and trying to insure a relatively turbulence free, open draw. Might well be an improvement on the original!”
