Smoking on porch thinking back on people I knew who are not here anymore, my Mothers brother who was on the Ship that brought Roosevelt to the Yalta conference just died he was 98, a mate who died on the Thresher submarine, my wife’s brother killed during the conflict while she was pregnant for our first child, worried I was gonna lose that first son. We live in a great country even though it’s in termoil, smoke a bowl or light a stogie to the veterans of this country. I served from 60:to 64, UDT.

Unfortunately, too many young and even middle aged men just have no clue as to what life is like when you got drafted. Probably the greatest injustice to this country was when they made serving our country a voluntary choice.
Time to reflect on what Memorial Day actually is...not just BBQs and a good time.

I actually sent an email to my students about Memorial Day, and the honor due those who gave their all to defend the freedoms we so easily take for granted.

In Flanders Fields John McCrae - 1872-1918
In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

The words "Fallen Heroes" are tattooed across the back of my shoulders, a fixed memorial to all those who paid the ultimate price for freedom. I was fortunate to get out with a few injuries, so many were not so lucky.
