Earlier in the week I visited a lot of my old haunts, and one of them is Monterey's cannery row. If you are familiar with Steinbeck's novel you will know of Doc Ricketts who was a real person. Surprisingly, the place is still standing and although I had to shoot through a chain link fence there is a sign where some local gentlemen have kept it as a private club to pay homage to the man and his work. Most people that walk by do not have a clue what it is and would say Doc Who? And the Wing Chong market sign is still up across the street in a building that now sells trinkets and tourist stuff. And a section of the railroad still exists up the street at the place Doc Ricketts was hit by a train as he was probably inebriated. In 1980 I worked on a construction crew where we replaced the pilings underneath the restaurants on Cannery row, drank on free tabs by the proprietors. Fun times! Morro Bay Ragged point south of Big Sur looking north...we travelled most of highway 1 on Memorial day so the crowds were out and I didn't feel like pulling over to take pictures of pretty incredible scenery...the emerald waters by the beaches were stunning. This one does not do justice. "little Denmark" Solvang California has some incredible eateries, had a great time there. Between my rewards points through Hilton, we never paid for a single night...on the hook for taxes, but no big deal. Nobody allows smoking on any properties. Driving back through LA sucked! endless construction zones and crowded freeways. All in all it was a nice getaway.

Very nice pics and write-up. Thanks! Ricketts bears a strong resemblance to Steinbeck at that time. At first I thought the bust was of the author.

I know that restaurant. Ate there in 1978 when I worked for the Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments or "AMBAG."
I remember the Doc's Lab. It was still legend back then. People remembered him. Monterey was still authentic back then. I had been around since the 1960s. It had not become entirely Turista, Yupp-ick, and rich. Boats still brought in squid for processing and other finny types.
Different now. First the tourists ruined Carmel, then Big Sur and then Monterey. Frozen yogurt, ice cream and T-shirts shops.

Very cool write-up, Charlie. Thanks for sharing. I've only been to that area once and it was a really neat visit. The experience added some perspective for me to reading some of Steinbeck's works. Well done.

Just bought on Kindle The Winter of Our Discontent, I believe it was his last Novel. His Cannery Row was great, now reading about the Alaskan Fisheres Story thru fictional characters by author McClosky, 3 book series, interesting to me from my shrimp boat days. Nice pictures Charlie!

Charlie— Are my eyes playing tricks on me, or are you totin'? In California? Huh? OK. My bad. I'm guessing it's a 'phone case. Duh!

Yeah, that was a phone case.... my phone is bigger than my edc! 😝
I hear you, John. The first time I was in Monterey was 1980, and a lot of the old buildings were still around, and it still had the fishing/ cannery vibe. My earliest view of cannery row was in the 1971 Eastwood thriller “ Play Misty for Me”, and watching Clint drive through the cannery row area, I recognized the exact spots, and made me wish it was all frozen in time. If I have seen one gift shop, I have seen them all, I rarely spend a dime, the wife doesn’t spend much but she likes to look anyway.
All I got from this trip was a “Pancho’s Surf Shop” long sleeved tee from Pismo beach, very cool graphics.
On another note, when I was in foodservice one of our accounts was Hog’s breath inn in Carmel. I saw Clint there twice, I never approached him as much as I wanted to, because I wasn’t there as a customer or fan.😕 One of my other customers that owned a pizza shop complained that he delivered to Clint’s house he asked Clint for his autograph as he handed the pizza over and Clint replied “If I do, do I get a free pizza?” I got the impression that Clint didn’t get a free pizza and the guy didn’t get the autograph.
He owns a lot of choice properties, and must be incredibly rich. He also (at least was) a partner in owning Pebble Beach Golf course, Spanish Bay, Spyglass, Poppy Hills, etc....
I should have titled the thread “Travels with Charlie” which is the title of a Steinbeck book. Don’t need the heir’s coming after me.😝
