I suspect all of us have struggled with this, some more than others. Knock on wood, but I think I am finally closing in on a solution. I've read some hints and am taking them to heart. Most successful so far has been the three-fills-and-tamps method. Fill bowl to rim three times, with light tamps, false light, then light tamp and re-light. Works better than anything I have tried and seems very consistently rewarding so far. Elementary for some, I know, but I guess I'm a slow learner.

been my best method since '62, glad you mentioned same. Seeing near all I smoke..ribbon cut or close to it, that works the best for me. Sure, did a little "playing" with a few other methods at the start but right on & thanks again for the mention

I modify this exact method slightly. I fill and finger press gently but with stern intent three times. Im sure to draw on my pipe after each press. Everything else is the same.

Bob, this was something I struggled with quite a bit as a new pipe smoker until I found this very helpful video by David McGrane of James J. Fox in Ireland.

Bob, this was something I struggled with quite a bit as a new pipe smoker until I found this very helpful video by David McGrane of James J. Fox in Ireland. I tried that a couple of times. It has worked for me, but I prefer to drop some strands in the pipe and use the end of a pencil to 'move' them together (not to push down per se). I add some more and repeat this until the pipe is full. I have found that gives me a consistent fill throughout the pipe and I can tend to smoke to the bottom with minimal relights.

I must confess that my packing skills are somewhat lacking. I tend to gravity fill and tap the side of the bowl to help it settle, one gentle press with a finger to even it out. However, this generally means that my burn is weak during the first third of the bowl, and after the first good tamp, it improves. I will have to give this method a shot.

I find that fingers (mine, anyway) give uneven pressure. I prefer to use a flat-bottomed tamper, and gently.

I use Jason's method of gravity fill and tap for cube cuts or finely rubbed tobaccos {I rub flakes out fully}and Bob's method for ribbon. I dry my tobacco to a point that I sometimes skip the false light. During the smoke I'll tamp gently around the inner edge of the bowl ,shaping the ash into a slight dome, only flatting at about midway through the smoke. That said, much depends on the size and shape of the bowl.

Interesting. I fill the bowl with a generous pinch, press it down with my index finger, top off the bowl with another pinch of tobacco, then lightly press down with my thumb, char light, press with a Czech tool, relight and enjoy the next 40 minutes.

Last night I watched an episode of ENDEAVOR, a Masterpiece Theatre series about the young Inspector Morse. Accompanying me was my Peterson House Pipe, charged as I have described. The episode lasted for an hour and a half and there was still good smoke to be had from the pipe. This morning I finished it off, stirred and re-tamped lightly, with another fifteen minutes of pleasant smoking. (With the the House Pipe I start by lightly filling to the brim and then "gravity bumping" until it settles well under half, followed by a very light tamp. Twice more brings it up almost to the rim. Takes three or even four fills to get it there. Makes for a long and very pleasant smoke.) The House and Pub are my current faves.

As I recall, Morse's boss in this series, Inspector Strange, is a pipe smoker. In fact, he's nearly always got a pipe in his mouth.

Strange is Morse's uniformed constable pal. In one episode Thursday breaks his pipe in a scuffle with a miscreant and mourns it appropriately. In another episode he forgets his pipe and has to go home to get it. It was a pipe-friendly time.

Pretty much a good hours smoke regardless of how I pack it or what kind of tobacco.

I find myself sitting in front of the TV in the evenings a lot lately, wishing I could smoke inside. With the weather warming up, I have been choosing to forego my pipes and stay in the A/C. So, lots of snus and snuff in front of the TV.

Why can't you smoke inside? I probably could, but my kids both live with me, so I choose not to smoke inside. In a few years, when they are grown and off on their own, I probably will smoke inside.
