Crazy. I freak out when some nut at the gas station gets out to pump with a butt dangling from their mouth.
Some old mountaineering books will mention that they had to stop smoking at altitude because they couldn't keep them lit. I've never climbed high, but I can't imagine tackling Everest or K2 puffing heaters on the way up.

The proximity of death is a pretty good scale. Imagine if the Surgeon Generals report on smoking had come out in 1944 instead of 1964. Oh, wait, it wouldn’t have.

Really...the thought of going to war, being shot out of the sky...don't think having a smoke was something anyone was worrying about.

When I first started at the airlines, there were some crusty old captains who would chain smoke during taxi with a window open. These were the vietnam fighter pilot types. Last thing they'd do before setting takeoff power was flick the last butt out and slam the window. This was LONG after smoking was banned on commercial flights. They were typically nice enough guys if somewhat loose canons, but man I never liked flying with them. Cigarette smoke makes me sick lol.

I would certainly freak out too!

There are called cigarette butts here too...but someone's posterior is also called a butt (as it is in your part of the world), so I got a different image in my head. My mind works in a weird way.

I really miss your Sunday service. I haven't had a chance to see if you are still posting them lately. I was off two weeks, but back this week and trying to sensitively address the current situation this week. Apologies that this thread has been so derailed. Back to our scheduled programme.

I should be the one derailing threads. I have been involved with a pretty big derailment before. Took out part of a bridge over the Sacramento river at Sims.
