Got some Watch City Lat Blends in some jars- I remember reading that Lats and English age but also lose flavor over time while gaining sweetness and mellowing out What's the synopsis and procedure with these from jarring to chooching?

While many lataholics complain that Latakia blends fade not to their liking, Steve Fallon pipestud wrote an article in a pipe magazine some years back about it. Aged Latakia blends typically command the highest prices in his resell market. I find that there is good reason for it, I like Latakia blends to mellow out and deliver a better smoke for me. If you are aging jarred blends for your own enjoyment, I would say go ahead. If you are aging tins to hopefully resell in the future, I say go ahead. Reading what others are saying, with the Syrian Latakia all gone, and the Cyprian Latakia facing an uncertain future, if you like the English blends I would suggest cellaring deep.

I think that it is an apples to oranges comparison. It is unquestionable that aged Virginia’s get better with age, and that is just my experience. The Lat blends that fade, at least for me shine with a bit of fading.
The trick for each palate is to figure out when that high point of aging increases, and years beyond that bring diminishing returns.
That…. In my estimation, is why buying 5 pounds over five years might suit the person cellaring better than buying 5 pounds in one year might pay better dividends. Of course depending on how much you smoke.
But having said that, with the uncertainty we see in the supply chain, and possible impending draconian rulings on tobacco, I see no downside in cellaring deep.

Depending on your age, I would suggest cellaring beyond 1.5 years.
Many moons ago, Brian Levine opined "Tobacco is never more available and more affordable than it is now".
Based on my observance, he was spot on. Think of cellaring for the future as preparation for yourself, hoarding would be done as an exercise in speculation and profiting on tobaccos not being available in the future as a person looking to cash in....which is not immoral, people do that as they play the stock market.

An excellent post, Mike. I like the comparison to wines, Greg Pease is no newcomer to assessing fine wines, he has a palate that I wish I had. And, Greg knows a thing or two about tobacco’s.👍 The Latakia blends really meld over time for me, and other than aromatic blends, my personal opinion is that cellaring with time is a benefit to the pipe smoker. Watch those tins though! The square ones are known to leak, after five years or so, you might have an unpleasant surprise. If you cellar the square tins, I suggest getting a vacuum sealer and vacuum seal the tins.

That's all well and good, but I've had a few latakia blends that were noticeably flat after just a couple of years. My Frog Morton for instance, is still good but seems to have less latakia with every can I open.

But then again, smoking that grape ape tobacco probably has not been a positive move in maintaining your palate.

I've actually smoked 4 bowls of Captain Black Grape in my life and I put the rest in a box pass.

I am waiting for Jiminks review. He would be offended that you even suggested that! But maybe he could be the next Tommy Chong.

I reckon you are right, I never heard him mention “skunk” as a flavor…. But then again maybe he needs to stretch his legs a bit.
