Just getting started. 65 years old. No, my avatar is not me; it's temporary until I can capture a selfie I like. Love the rich aromas of a nice pipe wafting through the air. Have very little experience with cigars. But I just like the aromatics of pipes better. Just the other day was driving though a reservation and a couple times I picked up on the sweet scent of something, driving through neighborhoods with my windows down and somebody, somewhere is chillin' with a pipe. Never smoked one before, but stepped up and bought my first one. It's coming UPS. Was a bit annoyed to discover I can't order tobacco online, everything else? Yes. But not tobacco in this weird state. So I did manage to poke around online and found a dealer about 20 minutes away that is a true pipe/cigar shop with a nice array of tobacco and pipe smokin' accessories. Had no clue what tobacco to start out with so I bought the Captain Black Royal and Gold pouches to test drive. Any other ideas for a newbie would be great. I will post my first experiences. Peace. For now.

Welcome to the forum from Arizona! Depending on where you live in Washington, visiting a pipe club meeting is the best way to get hands on advice. And, the ability to try a lot of different blends before you spend money on tobacco that you do not like, and avoid some of the problems when starting out. The Seattle pipe club is a very active group, The Kitsap club I do not know much about, scroll down to Washington state if that interests you. www.unitedpipeclubs.org/content.aspx?page_id=22&club_id=90797&module_id=195858

ok a bit more of a welcome, I was playing kitten furniture earlier. I enjoyed my time in Washington, but I left before finding pipes and before Washington went a bit wacky.
I'd agree with checking out the pipe clubs in the area. Also, just pick up 1 oz of a variety of what is available when you can. Then you can try a variety with out breaking the bank. Best of luck!

Yeah, sorry about the mail order thing. That's dang inconvenient. OTOH, you won't have all the shipping issues I have!

Welcome aboard! I believe there should be decent tobacconists in Seattle and surrounding cities? Try some Amphora Full Aroma, Peterson Connoisseur's Choice or Peterson De Luxe Mixture if you can get some.

Welcome from western Arkansas! I know the laws in WA are a pain. Not sure where you are located, but aside from the resources mentioned, there is (was..) a Tinderbox in Tacoma that used to have a decent selection of pipes and tobacco.

If you live near the border of another state you can get a PO BOX. I don't live near a border, but I do get out of state occasionally for fishing trips or just whatever reason. So I will need to create a scheme if it turns out the prices/taxes in state are rediculous. Like your byline BTW.

Welcome Buzz, Captain Black Royal is the only OTC aro that I always have on hand, now and then I'll bust lose and buy a white or Gold, but the Royal is a must have around here. Claude suggested Amphora Full Flavor, if you find it ,check for the Amphora Burley Blend. Burleys are a good next step from aromatics. You might try mixing the two C.B. blends for a third and more personal CB mix.

My first briar pipe is due to arrive tomorrow and so I went out and grabbed a $10 cob pipe at the local shop and smoked the Royal last night. Think I overpacked it; kept needing to get relit; no biggie, easy fix. But I am hoping to find a sweeter aromatic. There's a corridor of pleasant pipe smoke aromas that i really like. Now I'm wondering if, as the smoker, if I will get to enjoy it if I find it. Really like it when I pick up on others' smokes. It's an adventure. Having fun getting some stuff figured out. Thanks for the suggestions - will definitely give them a try.

Welcome! I'm on the west side of the Sound; I'm not sure where you are or what your local store is, but if you're anywhere nearby I can recommend the Cargo Hold in Poulsbo. 👍

Thx Stearman, I will check it out when I get over to that area. The place I found is in Everett called Everett Cigars and Tobacco. Very large cigar inventory with walk in humidifier; owner is very knowledgeable and helpful.
