I began pipe smoking in 1976. Pipe and pipe tobacco shops were everywhere. The malls had beautiful shops, overflowing with various pipes, with a few cigars on the side. Now,we have huge cigar emporiums, with maybe a small dimly lit booth in the back for the remaining pipe guys.I suppose tastes have changed...

Cigars became extremely fashionable 30 years or so ago, largely due to Hollywood, as I recall. Pipes went the way of men's hats.

There are a plethora of Cigar shops around me, with few that cater to the pipe smoker. I was almost laughed at and quickly dismissed when I asked an employee at one shop if they carried any pipe tobacco and accessories. Luckily we have a few old school shops around here, but they are becoming more scarce.
I try to visit those that do carry pipes, tobacco, and accessories when I can.

“ What Happened?”
There were a lot of pipe smokers back in say…. 1976 or so, that laid off smoking the pipe. The ensuing next few decades, saw a precipitous drop. In the 90’s the cigar boom took off, helping keep the tobacconist alive. But then smokers from 1976… that allowed their love for pipe tobacco’s wane, stopped consuming tobacco. Then the tobacconist had a hard time justifying carrying pipe tobacco with only a few guys walking in the door asking for pipe tobacco.
I hate to bring the bad news bulldog 44, but thou art the man that nearly extinguished our hobby. Stay on the horse now, and carry the torch.

Just wish the old brands like GBD and Comoy were the same quality as what used to be there in the 60's and 70's.
