I'm new around here and am loving the chatter, the great stories and recommendations, and even the banter. I happen to love wood. Real wood. Especially stuff hand made with real wood. So a gnarled briar is an easy choice for me. But that's just me.
I've noticed a number of members around here really love your cob pipes. And they are cool for sure. It's always great to hear and pay attention to the experiences of others and maybe a story about what is behind those preferences. So if you love your cob pipe(s), treat us to a little of your personal stuff and tell us why.

no cool stories for me, I just like them. I love the look and feel of a fine briar pipe, and I have 4 briar pipes. I love the low cost (which means very low worry for me) of the cobs, and they smoke great for me. I just picked up another couple of MM Country Gents and paid less than $11 each for them. Drop one, oh well. Lose one, that kinda sucks. But neither would break my heart. And $11 pipes leave a lot of my pipe budget for tobacco.
I'd suggest trying one, just to see what you think. Then you'd have at least one pipe you weren't worried about for doing chores, running errands, whatever. And you might find you like them.

They are great smokers...simple as that!...and I like the way they look...particularly when I stain them and make them more mine than regular cobs are.

Yup, have to agree with pepesdad1. When you stain them (all mine are), they become a little more personal, maybe. They sure look more interesting. They smoke great, especially burley-forward blends. I'd hate to break or lose one, but if that happens, I can replace it without spending much. I just finished up a pipe that I'm giving to my new-to-pipe smoking brother-in-law. I'm sure he'll like it. Working on a new one for myself this evening.

I haven't stained any of mine, but I was given one customized by Doug Erwin. I have at least a dozen. Everyone should have at least a half dozen.

I agree, great smokers, cost effective, and generally readily available. I was hesitant at first, took me close to two years before I bought my first cob, but I still have it, and quite a few more. Certain blends just really shine in a cob, and you can kind of mix and match pieces, set them up how you like, it's not going to be earth-shattering if something happens to then, and I'm honestly a huge fan of the tooth indentions that form after a while, it's like a custom fit clencher.

I like the way burley smokes out of a cob. It’s probably psychological but it seems magical to me.

I actually like the cheap stems for the same reason, they provide for a comfortable clench. Oh, and if you don't like the shape of the bend, dunk it in boiling water for 10 seconds and bend to suit. You might want to run a pipe cleaner through it and make a hook on the end. Run under cold water to set the bend. I also like how the amber stems darken over time

Yes, few things beat some Old Dark Fired in a cob.

I'll never buy another one due to a change in direction of marketing by MM, but they meet and often exceed the smokabilty of briar and meerschaum. With their wide open airway, they nearly smoke themselves.

Enjoyed the comments. The idea of personalizing with stain is cool. If anyone happens to have a before and after pic, please share.

When I figure out how to do that, I'll be posting pics. In the meantime, pepesdad1 has posted his a bunch of times. You might need to dig through his WAYS posts.

I like the fact that they are cheap, have a wide open draw, and smoke great. I also like to modify mine slightly. I'll post a picture below...

These 3 were stained for me by *pepesdad1 a few months ago. sorry no before pictures. All 3 were new. And sitting in a drawer. Waiting for the day they would be called in to action! I have 75+ briars and a dozen cobs. I will use 1 of those cobs, just about every day. The oldest is about 6 years and going strong. As others have mentioned, great smokers, low maintenance and if you lose one, or the dog decides it’s a chew toy. You not out much.

I like them because they smoke better or as good as my Dunhills, are by far the cheapest, require the lowest maintenance, and have a rustic charm the briars don't.
As has been said, the price allows you to smoke in situations where you wouldn't risk a briar - say while fishing or mowing. Also, you can leave one in your hot car and not care, and they're good for keeping a couple on hand to give to a prospective pipe smoker. If you want something personalized, you can stain them or add a fancier stem, and if you screw it up, so what?
The story of when and how Missouri Meerschaum came to be is cool; there's just no objective downside.

That pipe looks awesome Legend LoverI may be mistaken, but chasingembers may be referring to the Cornabis line they recently released.

What is the deal with that, Duane? I was wondering the same thing. I think it has to do with the fact that they are selling a line of pipes specifically to pot smokers. I have no opinion on that. It's legal in a bunch of states and I am sure that they just couldn't ignore the market opportunity.

recently in large gifted pkg, two, one pointy bottom, other a sitter, both with lucite stems. Leaving 'em natural for now, maybee get stained eventually. To me, have their use for yard pipes, short smokes & as mentioned, very "open" draw. Haden't had any for probably 35yrs or so. Recommended for what they are

Son of a gun, I had not seen the weed pipes before. Well, like Ron said, it's legal in a lot of places and a new market for them. I don't care, the illegality of weed kept as many people from smoking as Prohibition kept from drinking; I'll let folks that care duke that one out.

For me, they are a great smoke for a great price. I bought my first one about 3 years ago, and now my cobs are probably my most smoked pipes. I have quite a few briars, as well as a few meers. However, every time I smoke a cob I question why buy another briar. I love the artistry in briars and meers, but for a great straight forward smoke it is, IMO, hard to beat the cob.

At one time they had a disclaimer on their site that stated their pipes were not intended for drug use. The line appears and the disclaimer is removed from the site.

Looks like I'm one of the rare ones that just can't connect with the cob pipe. I have tried many, many times but it's not working for me. That's really unfortunate for my wallet, I reckon.

For me, I like the LotR shtick with my MM Cobbit Shire. More than that though, it's super cheap. I can smoke whatever I want in it without the least concern for ghosting or maintenance. Basically, they're good, cheap smokers that hold a significant place in the history of pipe making and pipe smoking. I like having one in my collection. oysters hampstead nc
