A recent thread about pipe rotation inspired me to start one about tobacco rotation. How do you do it? I always have six tobaccos in rotation. Fewer than six and I get bored, more than six and I don't get to know each tobacco as well as I'd like. The only constant is that there has to be a high nicotine tobacco that does not require drying -- I smoke that one in the morning. Right now it's Big & Burley. You?

I just tend to have one tin open (currently hh burley flake) at a time then my tubs of prince Andrew and derby club aromatic that are open. I also have a jar of ps cube cut I dip into but that’s about it.

I have 26 open tobaccos right now...
I keep telling myself I'm going to get the number down, but it keeps growing.

I smoke whatever I come across first that sounds good. Just to add… this approach is a lot of fun, it is pretty cool when you forgot about a blend that has been put away and you pop a tin and it knocks your socks off…. Some more than others, regardless, it is a rewarding enterprise, and it informs you on what genres of tobacco’s that should be smoked soon, what still has time available. That is the fun of the chase.

Haunted Bookshop is a must to begin each day. After that, I have a BUNCH (all in jars) from which to choose. That's where the fun begins.

I have far too many tins open as I want to try each one as they arrive. I've stopped doing that, but I still just smoke whatever calls to me from my tobacco box.

I have around 40 jars and I smoke whatever sounds good at the time. Sometimes I make myself smoke some I haven't had in a while. For the most part, I smoke about 6 or 8 favorites most of the time.
And I have another 30 or 40 2oz ziplock bags of stuff that I have tried and probably won't reorder - or I haven't tried yet. Some days I'll concentrate on them, giving them several tries before final judgement.

I have three open containers currently. I try to focus on one blend at a time, no more than two , really for no other reason than I don't want my tobacco drying out. However, as much as I enjoy 515RC, it has started to irritate the top of my tongue and so now have lots of open containers as I try to vary the tobacco I am smoking while still enjoying the red Virginia.

I have six jars and a couple of wraps sitting in a drawer. I only rotate based on time of day. First and last smoke? Something heavy. Midday? An all-rounder, MM965, Old Gowrie, etc. On occasion, or if I'm smoking inside? An aromatic.

Like others, I typically grab whatever tobacco catches my eye at the moment. I have a little over 50 blends in jars to select from. When I open a tin of a new blend, I will typically smoke a few bowls and then jar the rest and add it to the rotation. Lately, I've been focusing on smoking a few new burly blends in various pipes to see what works best.

I usually have 17 blends open. Why 17? Simple. That’s how many 8oz Mason jars fit on the curio shelf that hold my open tobacco. If I get down to 12 open, I start feeling like I don’t have enough variety to pick from.

The only rotation I really have is with my first pipe in the morning with my coffee. It’s either EMP, Chelsea Morning or Good Morning. After that it’s what ever strikes my fancy. Since I like just about anything that is pure tobacco I have a large selection to choose from.

I start off with a light Virginia, then a little EMP, followed by a good, sound Latakia blend like Ten Russians, or Pirate Kake. I'll indulge in something like Star of the East Flake in between. Works for me...

I have a few staples (Mac Baren Scottish Blend, C&D Mountain Camp, C&D Bayou Morning) that I buy in bulk and keep in jars. These I open up and smoke when I have a taste for them. When I buy tins it's usually more of an occasional thing, something that catches my eye in the store or catalog, and I'm a little bit more likely to smoke an open tin until it's gone, lest it dry out on me.
