Until the last few months, I went my entire pipe smoking career without throwing up. Then, in the last three or four months, I've thrown up three times. The first was ODF, the second was Royal Yacht, and the third was Old Joe Krantz. What the heck is going on? Any tips on how to avoid this?

Based on my personal experience, talking to others at the Pipe club, and on the forums I have concluded that you should have some food in the stomach when smoking, more so with high nicotine blends.
Being hydrated is also a good idea.
I have only gotten sick twice, both times were on an empty stomach with high nicotine blends.
Nicotine in the form of Chimo (a really potent form of oral tobacco) can really up the effects of an alcohol buzz.

+1 ... an empty stomach and lack of hydration are both common causes of the Nic-sicks.

I'll add this ... if you feel it coming on, grab a teaspoon of honey real quick and it will help ward it off.

Indeed, as noted, high nic blends and an empty stomach do not go together. Also, if you area hard puffer, you can't do that with these blends. Sip it slowly, as they say.

Maybe smoke a mild English for a while?

Once, with St Bruno Flake in 1995, my stomach started turning real bad and it was a very close call. Didn't touch it again until 2014. (It also happened with cheap Tequila when I was 23 (except I got real sick) but that's another story.) Now, when I get the hiccups from the nic hit I know it's time to stop. And, yes, it always involves a high nic profile tobacco and an empty stomach.

Yeah like other have said having someone in your stomach will help keep you from tossing your cookies. I also find a glass of milk can take the edge of I start to get woozy from the nic. But that haven’t happens in a while.

I have never gotten that far. But have gotten close. But now have learned, if it is a high nic blend. And it’s my first time with it. (Actually I do this with anything new. I make sure I have food in me and hydrate. I will smoke/sip slowly. After about 10-15 minutes. I just set it down and see how I’m feeling. This includes getting up and moving around a bit. If all is good. I go back in. If not. A little chocolate or honey as Darin mentioned. And return to it later.
I think many things can come in to play with this. From what you have in your stomach, what have you smoked already that day. Is it hot outside. Even your state of mind that day. Have you had a drink. Are you loaded up on coffee. Who knows.

Besides the great advice provided, for the next while, smoking tobaccos that have less nicotine would be your best bet.

While I've never puked, my first time with ODF gave me that cold-sweat, "I need some water and a quiet spot for a minute" feeling. It was that familiar nic-sickness. You might have had it when you were young and sneaking cigarettes for the first time, or you decided to finish off that can of Copenhagen even though you just spit some out, but you're drinking and not thinking, etc. etc. For strong tobacco: - Eat & hydrate
- Don't feel like you're obligated to finish the bowl. Stop when satisfied.
- Sugar. The second you feel that nic-sickness, stop and put something sweet in your mouth - candy, juice, whatever - it will usually stop it in its tracks.

So far, (knock on wood) I've never been sick from pipe tobacco. my first cigar when I was 16 was a different matter. iit wwas the cheapest I could find. I almost threw up. But I've smoked all of the above mentioned tobaccos on an empty stomach with little more than a few seconds of dizziness. I think it's because of my experiences in the 60s and early 70s.

I've a similar experience. I've only been queasy from pipe tobacco a couple of times and never thrown up. Although in all fairness, I would rather do most anything rather than throwing up. I did have that teenage cigar experience, also at age 16. If I remember right, the cigar had a greenish wrapper and I was certainly green whilst throwing up in the Griff's Burger Bar parking lot. It didn't stop me from eating my burger, after a good Coca-Cola rinse. The vagaries of youth!

I smoked Macanudos for a couple of years about the time I discovered pipes. I only smoke the occasional machine made cigar now. About 2 a year.

Back on topic I've been experimenting, and for really strong tobaccos (ODF, OJK) you don't just need some food in your stomach: you need a full meal. For milder tobaccos a piece of fruit or a little yogurt is enough.

OK, that theory is all shot to heck. Last night I had a large dinner and then smoked a bowl of Old Joe Krantz. I threw up. I did have a thought: earlier this year I quit using snus. My nicotine tolerance has probable gone way down. Perhaps I'll go back to snus for a couple of months and see if that makes a difference.

Maybe try something lighter for a while?

I had the nic-sicks a few months back - put me off the pipes for a while. I had a bowl of RDF on Sunday though and I was cautious - I had an apple beforehand and didn't get sick, thankfully. I really enjoyed it too - I forgot how good RDF is.

This is ever worse if you get this condition, when you are at your pipe club meeting. You need to wait until you feel safe, before driving home. (Don't ask how I know this.)

About two years ago, I thought I was having a heart attack, literally. I was petrified. I never felt so damn sick.
Sudden onset of rapid pulse, cold sweats, dizziness, upset stomach, violent vomiting, disorientation, detachment..... I was ready to call 911, that's how bad I felt!
But then.......I'll be a son of a bitch!..... I remembered I smoked my pipe on an empty stomach....I ate only a lite salad for lunch..... I remembered I had started a new "diet".
NIC HIT! did me in.
DON'T SMOKE ON AN EMPTY STOMACH. At least, suck on a sugary piece of candy, or on some chocolate....drink some Ginger Ale
