For years (at least 10 of them) I've made my ashtrays by gluing a cork knocker in the center of a Pyrex pie plate. Never had any problems until earlier this year. I always just used plain Elmer's glue. Then, the knockers stopped sticking. I tried super glue -- it didn't work at all. I tried Gorilla glue. It worked fine the first time, but that ashtray wore out (those cork knockers don't last forever). The second time was a couple of weeks ago. The knocker stuck just fine until today when it came loose. I figured I used too much glue, so I stuck another one down using just a whisper-thin layer. It's drying now and I'll try it tomorrow. If it fails as well, where do I go from here? Google was no help at all. I was able to find information about repairing glassware using glass-specific glue, but nothing more than that. Is there another glue that might work better, or should I try a different material for the ashtray? Ceramic, maybe, or stoneware?

I think that I used Gorilla glue on my cork knocker on a stainless steel ashtray, it has never budged, but I don't really ever knock my pipes...the pipe tool loosens up the residue, and a tap of the finger followed by a bent pipe cleaner does the trick.

I’ve converted a few big cigar ashtrays using craft cork. I’ve found that 3m double sided sickies work better than glue.

My cork knockers came with peel-and-stick on the bottom and it's held up for 4 years now. Might try Scotch mounting tape.

My experience with glue you have to rough both sides of what you want the glue to stick on.

Your project can be done. oldcajun123 is right in that glass is very smooth and for an adhesive to adhere it needs to grab the surface so I would start by taking a course grit sand paper or just something rough - even a granite rock would do - to put some cuts and grooves in that pie plate where you want to place your cork. Then with glass, I wouldn't have much confidence in anything short of two-part epoxy which I keep on had all the time for projects as this. It stinks a little and is easy to work with but not as super convenient as a squeeze tube of glue. Just grab a paper cup and a wooden craft stick to stir it (or whatever is around that you can toss in the trash). Squeeze in equal amounts of each part and stir well. Use the craft stick to apply the mixed epoxy to each surface and set your cork in place. Give it 24 hours to set hard. And that my friend should hold up fine.
I love epoxy. My daughter had an old microwave in her kitchen above her stove and the handle broke off. There was no fixing it. But she's a tightwad. So I said let me try epoxy. Mix and applied a super abundance, clamped it on overnight, and now two years later the thing is still hummin'.

After having the cork knocker with the pre-installed adhesive come loose after a few months (stuck in an older cigar ashtray), I now just leave it as is, unstuck as it were, and it functions just fine. It is simple to dump and much easier to wash out without the knocker glued in place. Sometimes the best solution is the simplest solution?

I have another solution. I got a silicone rubber ashtray with the knocker molded in.

I buy em online in a pack of 6 or 12 with the peel n stick adhesive, a couple of $ a piece. When it comes loose I toss it , clean the ashtray and stick another one.
