We all have our favorite methods of applying fire to tobacco. Over the years, mine has evolved. When I first started smoking, I used a Zippo for a few years. Then I used matches for just a couple of years. Then I was a loyal Old Boy user for over a decade. Now I use Bics. You?

Tried them all. Corona Pipemaster is number one, another Corona is second.

I use a combo of wooden matches and Zippos. Matches always for the pre-light and first light. BTW, what direction do those Coronas throw the flame?

Either the Old Boy or the Old Boy knockoff; one works pretty much as well as the other.

I generally use an Old Boy. Sometimes my Peterson (Old Boy clone, basically). Occasionally I'll still use a Zippo. In a pinch, a Bic.
Because the fluid evaporates so quickly, you really have to commit to a Zippo. If you don't use it several times a day, you might as well pour the fluid straight out of the can down the toilet.

As with firearms, I go the mission specific route. Camping, outdoors or a chance of wind, the Zippo with the pipe insert. Travelling, staying at a hotel, pipe club meeting, it is generally now my Lotus pipe lighter, or my Dissim. At the house, I tend to use matches, and or the Lotus/ Dissim, or as a novelty the Beattie jet or Flamidor Flambeau.. My back up gun in all the above is a Bic, and matches. "Hey buddy, got a light?" was a great line back in the day, but these days it seems most people don't smoke publicly to ask for a light.

It seems that the world has forgotten about all the good that the Scouts did. They saved my life, along with a lot of my friends.

I always have a Zippo close at hand, and where the wife goes, so goes a bic or two, and it's a good thing too, when the Zippo runs low on fluid.

When I began pipe smoking I used paper book matches, because that's what was around. Later, I moved on to wood matches, which I still use. However, if the day is a bit breezy, and the sun is out, I'll use a magnifying glass. Lighting a pipe on a breezy day with a match is just a waste of matches. And solar energy is free. Out camping in the evening, it's easy just to pull a dry twig from the wood pile and use it as a match.

I use matches indoors or if there is little to no wind outdoors. I always carry a Djeep butane lighter for when the matches are too difficult. If I am traveling light, I may just carry a cob, an OTC blend in a pouch, a twig tamper and the Djeep. Doing that more and more.
