About 6 yrs ago I brought my Explorer Rolex to Paul’s Jewelry store in Lafayette La for a tune up. They called me and said I was ready, I walked in and asked for my watch, a clerk went in the back to get it, an elderly man came and asked if I was a Vet, he’d notice my USS IOWA hat , yes I said a Captain who recommissioned it was a friend and knew I served in S Asia sent it to me. When the clerk brought the bill, the elderly man cut it in half. Later after thanking him I found out he was the owner. Fast forward to this week, my clasp broke on it and wife brought it back to Paul’s. A couple days after I called and a elderly man again answered, he checked and said they fixed it with a new pin and it was only 20$. I told him how he had cut my bill in half years ago and how much that touched me and was a memory I would carry and that he was a fine man. He thanked me. Today my wife goes to pick it up and no charge. Before anyone says I played that tune again, that’s why I had my wife go bring it. I’m going to try and write a nice card to him and tell him how much I appreciated his recognition of Veterans. In the 60s when I got out, I was a Baby Killer.

Lots of good people out there, but the dicks tend to hide them sometimes. Sounds like a good guy. Not many businesses that even have the same people from one week to the next anymore.

Great story. On some levels our freedoms are going to shite but it's great to be reminded that we have a backbone of good folks that have a clue.

That's a lovely story. Really touching that there are still good people out there. Sadly it's heavily weighted to the older generation.

My guess would be that you just can’t afford to do what you want and call it a lose of your freedom! I love mechanical watches and right now my Rolex needs to get serviced and I’m not looking forward to the bill. It’s very expensive!

You Vietnam vets were my heroes growing up and you still are. I won’t ever take for granted the sacrifices men like you made for the rest of us. Thanks for your service.

Great story, Brad!
That kind of service is certainly more the norm with a mom and pop business than it is with a corporate owned store. Sadly, with the advent of covid, so many mom and pops were not able to weather the storm.
The wife and I are trying to buy local as much as possible with an eye towards independent stores for that reason. We can go online to replace our window treatments, but we are going to give the business to a local family owned store, even though it will cost more.

That, is unfortunately, what it will take to keep them above water.

Same here Ron, I could have bought my Zero Turn for about 250$ less at big box store. My local hardware man comes and picks it up, for 50$ for blade replacement, oil change and whatever it needs. Big Box is finished with you after the buy. I try whenever I can to use local people, one time after a tune up it was leaking oil, he came and picked it up, later told me he’d installed the head gasket crimped when he adjusted the valves, no charge, how about that, he didn’t want but I gave him 50$ anyway.

Yep. I'm buying the new garden tractor from a local place. I could save a little at Lowe's, but I want someone I can trust.

Having formerly been the chump that had to haul the hazmat product from Lowe's and saw the hazardous situations they put me in as a result from their desire to cut corners at my expense, I am done with them. Nothing like a drum off-gassing in your face because they decided to rid the company of a haz waste manager onsite, to responsibly segregate the waste so this would not happen.

That's pretty rude and I'm sure that OSHA would have something to say about it. And the Geneva Convention. 😉🤠
