What blends have come back to after a year or more, and your impression completely changed? A blend you didn't care for, then really like, or a blend you used to really like but then don't.
I just got some Old Joe Krantz, which I used to really enjoy. This morning, after at least 3 or 4 years away from it, I had a bowl. Smoked it in a cob, as I always used to. Tasted a lot like a cigarette, not like the pipe tobacco I remember. I don't know if the blend changed, or just my tastes. I just found it really interesting how much my impression of the blend changed.
I'll hold on the rest for a bit, maybe send it along to someone who enjoys it. I don't think I'll be having any more of it any time soon.

Never liked Old Joe Krantz or Haunted Bookshop. Always thought, like you said, tasted like cigarettes. But I open a jar I have of Haunted Bookshop once a year to see if my tastes have changed. Nope, the stuff is still horrible.

OJK is a stout blend for sure, and with its components will always have that cigarette character, at least fresh. That being said, if you put some age on it with the amount of VA that is in it, you will see a rather significant change in flavor, at least in my experience.

I actually have some OJK as well which was put away 4-5 years ago. Guess I'll have to open it.

Red Virginias when fresh will eat up my mouth and throat...5 years age and they become sweet and mellow. Try some 5100 with age on it and it will sing for ya.

Man, my list would be really long. There are so many blends I tried and tried again over the last 33 years. To name a few:
- I hated Peterson Irish Whisky made by Murray's (the casing was sickening) but tried it again when it started being made by STG and love it. - I didn't like Erinomre Flake made by Murray's but enjoy the STG version. I find Murray's lacked a lot of consistency in their products. - I loved the Imperial Tobacco rendition of Capstan but don't care for the Mac Baren version. Imperial Tobacco version had dark Virginias, it was very flavorful. - I didn't like St Bruno Flake made by Odgen (mid 1990s, almost made me sick) but love the Mac Baren version. - I didn't care for Peterson Sherlock Holmes when I tried it in 2007 or 2008. I tried it again a few months ago and really enjoyed it.

Haven't really had a chance, yet. The blends I can actually remember from my previous smoking life were all McClelland's and Esoterica. Those weren't all I smoked, but I don't have strong memories of anything else, really.

I just returned from my smoking den, with a bowl of Haunted Bookstore. But this time it didn't taste good. This was one of the first blends I tried, when I picked up the pipe.

Boy when *Silver sees this thread…. Lol. I didn’t like Haunted Bookshop when I first tried it as a newbie. But now enjoy it a couple times a month on a Friday, Ode to Matches860.
Worked on a a 2017 DH tin of EMP. Starting in 2017. Did not like it at all. But over time. (I assume age helped) I started to enjoy it.
The one I have a love/hate relationship with is CD Carolina Red Flake. Must be a seasonal thing. Sometimes I love, then suddenly, it does nothing for me at all. Wait a bit, and it’s my best friend.

Lately I've been reaching in an old jar of Fox & Hound almost daily. I can't truly say I've ever disliked it, only that there's no shortage of mild English blends, and it never stood out before... now I find it lip-smacking good, to the point that it's time to reorder.

Hahaha. Didn't realize that HB was such a polarizing blend. It's Six Pence and Haddo's Delight all over again. Smoke what you like, like what you smoke.

I bought a bunch of 5100 years ago (like, maybe eight or ten years?) and when I run across some of it and smoke it even now, it's better every time.

"Smoke what you like, like what you smoke" is good advice always. I also wanted to like Haunted Bookshop when I tried it many years ago, partly because of the name and the association with Christopher Morley's book--but also out of respect for Bob Runowski, who created it (along with OJK and many others). I couldn't, though. I think it's the burley. Clearly burley is loved by a great many pipefolk, but there seems to be a minority of us who just can't seem to get along with it, or only in relatively small proportions. I wonder if it might be some genetic quirk, like the one that makes cilantro taste like soap to some people.
Mr. Runowski was of course a specialist in and master of burley blends. He did turn his hand to other varieties as well, though, so I can count another of his creations, Bayou Morning, among my favorites.

ok, since 5100 is no more. What would be some other blends that would be well suited for cellaring long term. I know the latakia blends tend to lose some pop, while the Virginias like some age. Give me some suggestions if you would.

Probably the most service oriented retailer for the online buyer, they shipped immediately and you mail them a check when the product arrived, I am not sure if that is they way it is done now though.

C & D's Burleys are what I would nickname of the 'brute force' variety, strongly reminiscent of a stable and delivering a good dose of nicotine. They seem to me to be more on the raw side, almost. I recently tried some of their Burleys again (OJK and Haunted Bookshop) and just can't get along with them. I love Solani, Wessex, G & H and Mac Baren's Burleys, though.

Agreed. Some if the first burleys I tried were the popular C&D blends. I hated them. After I jarred them for just a few months and let them breathe a little bit, they were much better. Some of them have a few years on them now and I'm curious to see (taste) the difference. I'll know in a few weeks when I make the trip back to GA

For me that blend would be Mac Baren's Mixture Scottish. It was an aro that I have really enjoyed in the past. Tried some the other day, and it just seemed to fall flat for me. Maybe all those C&D burly blends I've been trying lately are ruining my palate ;D.

Charlie, I'm fortunate enough to have them right here in NC. I've visited both of their locations around Charlotte and bought from them directly vs phone or interweb. They are indeed very pleasant to work with and very fair on their prices. A few years ago I picked up 5 tins of the 98 Red Ribbon. Got em for $20 each.
