I am in the small pipe category..I have several and rejoice in their daintiness and quality...I have larger pipes, of course, and will enjoy them as well, but for me, at the present moment, a am in favor of small pipes...to taste the flavor of the tobacco and the enjoyment for the short smoke.

I've always loved the big pipes, but lately I have been preferring smaller pipes.

Sign me up on Small Team. Here's my first and often most favorite pipe, a Butz-Choquin Belami Canadian: I have the apple. Nice little pipes. Also have a couple of Savinelli Petites and probably 4 or 5 other small pipes. They're handy for quick smokes, and nice and light for clenching. I have some quite large pipes, too, but I seem to favor slightly smaller than average.

October 10th. I have both a very large and very small pipe. Petersons Special Series Rusticated Barrel with army mount in nickle...a big name for a tiny pipe. Castello GGG lovat (shape 75) searock. Almost a stack and large diameter.
Each brings a focus to blends. Big, mellow small, intense.
my petite pete runs about 20 mins with the Castello able to run two hours or more with the right blend and slow cadence draws.
water pours out of the petite pete. the walls are about 3/16ths thick so it lets you know if you get it too hot and with very little briar to sop up water it gurgles quickly. I use it for quick smokes of high power blends or to make a mild blend develop more punch. being the shortest time of my pipes I tend to use it a lot for in between bowls or when I am pressed for time. Castello GGG this pipe runs long.. makes any blend shine. One is going to give this pipe sole attention. It is big in the hand, very light for the size, and cost a lot.(600+ and no GGG WITH rusticated rim can be had online) so not being able to replace it makes me focus its care and tending for the entire smoke. I dont walk or work on anything when using this pipe. Just get some tasty beverages, load it, relax for two hours. It is one of the driest smoking pipes I own.
So for me I find both extremes to have a charm. Petersons offers an x105 and a 107 size in spigot billiards and I have both. The smaller x105 is about the same as the gbd 256 the 107 is similar to the savinelli nonpariel being shorter in height than the castello. The x105 size is a favorite pipe for some activites and the 107 is mainly a sit and smoke. I do not mind walking a bit or even some light chores with it. Each class size of bowl is selected by what blend I am having with the smaller bowls excluded from plug tobaccos (by the time it lights and begins to develop the bowl ends) and the larger bowls are excluded from very mild blends as they get too mellow for me. So I hope that adds some informations on the topic of pipe bowl size!

I think Duane's expression says it all to that author.

I think I'd lean to the small pipe team too. I do like the fact that I don't have to repack with a larger pipe, but I think the small pipe is the way to go.

I say! Buddy got it all wrong on both marks! The medium pipes (Group 4) are the best. Small is too small and large is too, well, you get it. Medium pipes are balanced. Not not enough and not too much. The middle path. Equilibrium. That's all I own at the moment. I know, it's a funny coincidence but what can I say.

I lately like wide chambers, 7/8" or so. They develop the flavors better for me, especially complex mixtures. I even like them with flakes. For pipe club meetings and shows, the small Group 1 bowls rule, since that setting leads me to try multiple blends in a short time. Besides, being a nic wimp, I don't want to overdose on the nicotine. That said, I have a short attention span - lol.

and no GGG WITH rusticated rim can be had online I've never understood Castello's thing about having a smooth rim on a rusticated or sandblasted pipe. I have them but I strongly prefer and will pay a premium matching rim! I'd guess they like the look of the contrast of the smooth top with the rusticated bowl.
I've been packing pipes for my winter migration south and everything I've selected so far are larger Gr6, Collectors and G/GG size and up. I rarely smoke my smaller pipes anymore. part of it might be that I cracked my pipe tooth last year. The crown fits and feels fine but I can't seem to clench a pipe with it. The pipe kinda pivots on the crown and drops down. I don't even have my distinctive scratch pattern on the bit anymore. I've very frustrating.
