Pat Garret's 45 SAA, with which he dispatched Billy the Kid. Recently sold at auction for $6-million.

Apropos perhaps of nothing... D. H. Lawrence wrote 'The essential American soul is hard, isolate, stoic, and a killer. It has never yet melted.' Perhaps unrelated to this quotation (but perhaps not) he had spent a good bit time in New Mexico.

At the same auction, J.W. Hardin's DA S&W 44 went for $625,000. It was the gun on him when he was shot (murdered is more exact, from behind) by John Selman. I'm betting his S&W was in a Tio Myer's shoulder rig which Hardin liked and used for several other guns. (Successors to Myers is El Paso Saddlery which still makes the Hardin rig.) The outcome would have surely been different if Hardin had been facing Selman. (By a cruel irony, at the same auction Selman's gun, with which he killed Hardin, went for $858,000. It was a 5-1/2" SAA in 45.) Selman was later killed, in a gun fight.

I had a S&W DA .44 Russian like that. Traded a Winchester 94 for it back in '71. Good shooter!

Al Copone's pistol just sold for $1,040, 000.
It's been suggested that it's a fake. I know that he had a full auto 1911 that he was very fond of.

Interesting story, thanks! Article says "Lebman started with the standard .45 ACP caliber Colt M1911A1 semi-automatic pistol as used by the US military in World War 1 and made it into something quite different..."
The first and third guns shown are indeed A1s, but the second is a 1911. Plus, the 1911A1 was NOT used in ww1 since it didn't come along until 1926. Minor (maybe) but telling.

All I know is I had a Smith & Wesson DA .44 Russian, top break, like the photo. Perhaps it was chambered for another .44 but accepted the old Russian Cartridge? SHot fine with many round through it while I owned it. The piece originally belonged to my friend's grandfather who was a Special Policeman and guard at the Sutro Bath House in San Francisco in the early 1900s.

^ No doubt you had a "DA 44" factory-chambered in 44 Russian. A catalog item. This revolver, with a slightly lengthened frame and cylinder was also available in 44-40 (44 WCF)— a powerhouse compared to the Russian, but the Russian was/is one of the all-time handgun accuracy cartridges.

According to the NRA article the gun on Hardin when he was killed WAS a Frontier model, which means it would have been a 44-40, and not a Russian. Hardin had always struck me as a 44-40 kinda guy and not too apt to like the Russian cartridge. Interesting stuff.

I'm amazed on what people will spend vast amounts of money. I suppose if you have billions then 6 million is like us spending a fiver for something.

Capone's pistol is driving me crazy. It is extensively modified, to the point where there is practically no 1911 left. Those sights and the trigger are the result of (several) visits to an experienced pistolsmith. (The installation of the rear sight notwithstanding.) Nowhere have I seen speculation on WHO that 'smith might have been. Nor have I found anything about the engraver. It is truly a mystery gun.

I've read another expert say that some of the parts are later than Capone. But the providence says otherwise. I don't know, but it's a fine pistol.
