A lot of people find bowl shape matters just as much. Two pipes -- a pot and a stack, say -- might have the same volume, and smoke different tobaccos very differently.

I like the more narrow bowls for Virginia’s, they seem to be a bit more forgiving. A wide bowl works for me with Latakia blends that smoke cooler. But then again, I know that for some that it doesn’t seem to make a difference, your mileage may vary.

There’s not much, if any, difference that I can tell. I have pots that smoke VAs just as well as my 1.75”X11/16” chambers. I DO tend to grab my skinnier bowls for VAs, but I’m pretty sure that’s my subconscious telling me to do so, since when I first started many people said that was the thing. But, honestly, I smoke just about anything in any pipe, except for my Lakeland dedicated ones.

My experience is that it affects mechanics which can effect flavor. For example, in my case, getting a stack shaped bowl to burn all the way to the bottom is very rare whilst I tend to not heat up a wider bowl as much as a narrower bowl. I personally started with smallish bowled pipes and have increased total volume as I've smoked more and more but this is mostly down to being better able to manage an even and consistent burn rate.

Does size matter? Boy this is an age old question that has never been answered to anyone's satisfaction, as each person possesses a unique palate. However, common tastes do gather similar folks together, creating different camps of thought and those stretched in between .. Some point to the girth (bowl's width). others the length (The bowl's height), and then there is the ever popular combination of the two. Most guys fall into the camp " it is how you use it that counts" ; the stamina and cadence (in the puffs),. the experience packing (a bowl), the proper positioning, the conditioning, the tools necessary etc. all are a part of the ultimate achievement of mutual pleasure to both you and your partner. ..........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
