Sir Walter Raleigh in an MM Mark Twain cob. Much better smelling and moisture content once the tub's been open a few weeks. Just back from a long walk around the park and golf course.

Storm Front ,in a huge briar calabash, marked Prince of wales. The deep rustication on this pipe gives it a wonderful hand feel, and it passes a pipe cleaner like a champ, yet the airflow is more restricted than I would have it. I'd like to open the airway myself, so a few tips would be welcomed. I use a 4.5mm drill, then chamfer the stem end with a tapered bit.

Carolina Red Flake w/Perique in a Savinelli Porto Cervo 1/4 bent Dublin or something. Looks like their 305, to me. That and the 313, 315, and 316 are probably my favorite shapes from them. The 313 is an obvious prince, but the others are a little difficult to classify. A conical pot, sometimes with a diamond shank. I dunno. But it works.

Yeah, its a 305. Definitely an Italian interpretation of a standard shape.

I'd like to open the airway myself, so a few tips would be welcomed. The vast majority of the time, I find that airflow issues are caused by the stem and not the stummel. Therefore, drilling the airway in the stummel with a 5/32” drill bit is my step of last resort if stem mods don’t work. If you do drill a stummel DO IT BY HAND. Put a ViseGrip on a drill bit. However, most of the time the problem is a poorly made slot. I often see slots that are too shallow and improperly funneled. The airway inside the stem is drilled with a tapered bit. Go too shallow with the slot and you’ve got a really bad choke point restricting air flow. so, first I funnel the slot. If that doesn’t fix it, then I look at chamfering/funneling the airway entry into the tenon. If that doesn’t fix it, then I look at drilling the stummel. For funneling slots, I use a combination of micro-files and the slot funneling tool sold by Vermont Freehand.

Good morning! Starting the day with Davidoff Danish Mixture in my Peterson Walnut Spigot 150. Tetley English Breakfast tea with milk & sugar on the side. I don't know what Peterson uses as a pre-coat but it still delivers an awful taste at pipeful no. 3. There's a bit of excess stain still happening but not much.

Storm Front ,this morning in an Aldo Velani lumberman. Thanks to John and Ron for your tips. My next bowl in the Prince of Whales was much improved by a simple change in packing method. The pipe is very large ,and I used a three layer manner of packing...last evening's bowl I simply gravity fed the tobacco, added a light tamp with my thumb, and the result was a much better draw, not the best, but greatly improved.

Peterson certainly used to know how to make a pipe without this weirdness. One wonders what happened. I hope it will quickly dissipate over the next pipeful or two, because it tastes gross. As where I used to be able to remove the pre-coat with pipe cleaners and rubbing alcohol when they were using the previous one (which was stain, I heard) and solve the issue, I just can't remove this one unless I would use sanding paper or something similar. Because of the nature of the ingredient, I suspect the briar loses on its breathability capacity and it makes the smoke hotter. Someone doesn't seem to understand the chemistry of it at that factory. This being said, the briar used for mine seems to be of better quality. The pipe is fairly lightweight, 42g for 150mm long, 48 high and 40 wide. It's ok; I have me all them Dunnies to console myself so I'll be fine.

I always test the draw of the stem with it removed from the pipe, then the stummel without the stem to determine where the problem is. I purchased a small hand drill for this. Either way I always match the opening of the stem with it's opposite opening in the stummel to prevent turbulence.
