Hey everyone, I said hello in newbie section. I am totally new to pipe smoking. I didn’t get off to a good start. I had everything ready to smoke my new pipe. I lit the Zippo and the Zippo burst into flames, the over filled lighter fluid drained on to my hands and both hands were on fire. I put my hands between my knees to squelch the fire. I threw the Zippo on a tray and watched the Zippo consume all the lighter fluid in the Zippo. Luckily the lighter does not burn hot like gas and I didn’t even get a first degree burn. I am sure Zippos work great if you know what you are doing but I am going to stay away from them. I’m going to a butane pipe lighter. I use a butane cigar lighter and it works for me. In spite of my stupidity I lit up my first pipe and it didn’t go do too bad. Just a little tongue bite. I’ve got a lot to learn! YouTube has been a big help.

Kitchen or camping matches are a good alternative. As is butane--a wealth of models to choose from. The appeal of zippos must be nostalgia as the fluid contaminates your tobacco load. If you like the model there are butane inserts that fit a zippo case--check Amazon.

That had to be a little exciting for you. Butane's good. I just use a Bic lighter, no cigar torches. And, welcome to the Patch.

Welcome. I'm glad the lighter mishap didn't discourage the whole experience. Matches are my go-to, a Zippo (pipe lighter, not standard) is #2, and a Bic comes last. No "torch lighters" unless you want to burn up a pipe.
Don't worry you'll get the hang of it.

Don’t feel to bad I’ve overfilled my zippo and experienced the flaming hand and ball of zippo fire too. Luckily I didn’t get burned.

Welcome, and sorry to hear about that first mishap. Make sure whatever you use, you use a "soft" flame. Do not use a cigar torch style lighter to light any pipe. I suggest Bic lighters, and matches only.

Well, you surely have a funny story about your first time; but I've had it happen too. I still like my Zippos, but lately I use a bic, or wood matches. Nice to have you with us, Hang in there, and don't play with fire!

Yo Paul - glad you survived trial-by-fire. I like the Zippo for one-handed use when relighting while driving, but after suffering with the smelly lighter fluid that came with it, I found this butane soft flame thingie www.walmart.com/ip/Z-Plus-Pipe-Flame-Insert/986321765?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=4057. It's been working great for a couple of years - no flints since it's piezoelectric. Amazing to me that Walmart even stocks it. Obviously Amazon has it as well, and there appear to be lighter EStores that have them, but I have no idea how reliable they are. Apparently there was a similar device called Thunderbird. hp les

Yikes, that's not a great start at all. Butane isn't a bad alternative, but I'd avoid the blow torch versions and opt for a soft flame.
At least the smoking experience went well for you.

Welcome from Chicago!
Filling a Zippo without overfilling it is not a science but an art, which is why I usually fill mine at the bathroom sink. I'm glad no serious damage was done and that you are staying with the pipe. It's a learning experience for sure, but well worth it.

I have had the same flaming experience… no fun.
5 second squirt is sufficient for fueling.

Welcome to the Briar Patch. I overfilled my zippo once and carried it in my pants front pocket and before I knew it I had a chemical burn on my leg that took days to heal.

Petroleum products and skin are no joke.
Back in the seventies I helped my uncle that ran a janitorial service for a car dealership. While pumping from a 55 gallon drum of kerosene that we mopped the work bays with, the pump separated from the barrel and covered my front sides… My clothes and skin were soaked.
Finished the day and went home, later that day it was as if the dried fuel was ignited…. I laid in a tub full of water for hours to mitigate the pain, it was still pure hell to the then teenager.
Thinking about it back then… I am not sure of the flash point of kerosene, it really cut the grease, but it could have been a bad scene.

If you had changed immediately you would have been OK. My skin was tender when I was a kid. Now, not so much.
