I know some people don’t want to share their honey holes but what is your favorite inexpensive estate pipe brand? I really like Aldo Velani pipes from the 70s and 80s. I find them to smoke better than most entry level brands like Peterson and Savinelli for a lower entrance fee.

St. Claude and other brands that are St. Claude pipes. Wonderful smokers with nice fit and finish and occasionally really nice wood.

I've found that BBBs are often a good deal.

I like to look for "Edwards" pipes. Older French/American pipes that are well made and cheap.

Depends on how you define cheap. I've purchased most of my Dr. Grabows $10-30. BBB, Hardcastle and Parker, $25-70. Same with my Stanwells.

Silver makes an excellent point. I’ve found some really nice St. Claude pipes for under $30, which I think is the cheapest of cheap range. If I moved that number up to $50 to $75, I would say Butz Choquin.

I've found that BBBs are often a good deal. I would agree with that. Jobeys are usually really good smokers, too, and aren't super sought after.

If you can find them Savory pipes are very good smokers.

Ben Wade the older the better and look for the Dunhill era. Stanwell pre 1980.

You know, I have a couple of Aldo Velani pipes and they are really nice pipes that smoke great. I remember thinking when I got my first one that it probably wouldn't be any good, but I was very pleasantly surprised.

I think that any of my British estate pipes from days of yore are a good deal...not really brand specific, I have gotten some great Saseini/GBD/BBB/Dunhill '52 Tanshell for $10 ..... The sub brands of the British pipe makers, too many to recollect... Sometimes you get a dog, but it is rare. I did buy a gurgling dog from a British pipe-maker on this forum (aesthetically it is a beaut). Don't be that guy...sell it on Ebay. I still have it, but I do not have the heart to make money from it...I may gift it to a pipe seller in Vegas though.

St. Claude and other brands that are St. Claude pipes. Wonderful smokers with nice fit and finish and occasionally really nice wood. I have a Genod bulldog{ish} pipe that smokes like a dream. As for Aldo Velani, I have one that is my favorite perique puffer, and two more that were gifts, if there is a downside to A.V. pipes, it would be the devilishly long break in period; Y.M.M.V. but mine took a great while to break in. I have an old Hickok billiard, just a stub really, that someone before me had cut down the shank and redrilled it to fit the stem, likely after a snapped shank...working my way through a big lot of estates, I first thought to ditch the ole boy, but the natural finish and the size of the bowl spoke to me. I cleaned it up and later found it to be a fine smoker; I still have it, along with a bulldog and another billiard I picked up in an antique shop some years later, all good smokers.

Another marking that is perhaps sleeping in a few of our collections is " Made in London England ", lots of goodies fly under that banner.

Yup. Got a few of those and a couple "Made in Italy". Made in Italy Now that's going to need a thread of it's own! Picked them up at Dad's Smoke Shop in Cleveland (Kamm's Corners). A sandblasted billiard and a smooth Zulu. Dad's has a wall mounted cabinet filled with $30-50 pipes and a corner display of tobacco. They also have a cabinet in the middle of the room with Peterson and Savinelli pipes, plus a few other brands. The Meerschaum that I've been smoking also came from there.

Ben Wade the older the better and look for the Dunhill era. Stanwell pre 1980. I recently bought a London made Ben Wade Giant estate for a ridiculously low price. Good pipe, great pipe even. Edit: I'm going to have to disagree with you on the Stanwell's. The early 1990's pipes, right before they switched to Italian manufacturing, were the peak of Stanwell pipes. I have two from that era with stunning grain patterning and exquisite stems.

Another marking that is perhaps sleeping in a few of our collections is " Made in London England ", lots of goodies fly under that banner. I've got two billiards that fit that description, a large Canadian and an extra-large Lumberman, both Charatan made though unmarked. Great smokers and gorgeous grain. A large fill on one, and a flaw in the briar on the other turned these two into basket pipes. It boggles the mind that a sand pit or small fissure changes the value of a pipe from $100+ to $20 or $30; or in this particular instance, a lot purchase of four pipes for $20. The other two pipes were a Kaywoodie Red Root billiard and the aforementioned Whitehall Grand National (straight pot).

I have a few pipes that have pits that are very tiny, and with a good job of filling, practically indiscernible. But that made them seconds.
