I ordered a Dunhill and some store blends from the Country Squire back during COVID. Like that order from a different place that I described recently, the USPS carried it off into the ether, somewhere. Unlike that experience, the CS folks engaged, got on it, tracked it down, let me know where it was and what to expect, followed up a couple days later, and maybe a week after that it finally showed up.
They done good.

One experience instantly popped into my mind. This was at least fifteen years ago. While I only smoked meerschaum, clay and cob pipes then, I still knew a bit about briars and I would occasionally buy collections for a meerschaum pipe or two that I wanted, so I ended up with a lot of briar pipes, that I sold in 2012. Then started acquiring more again. Anyway, a woman listed her father’s (deceased) pipes on eBay. I can’t even remember what pipe I bought it for now, but I remember it was only about six or eight pipes total in the group. When I got the package, there was a note in it saying she had found one more and included it as a bonus. It was an unsmoked, still in the box Rainer Barbi. It bothered me, she clearly didn’t realize its value. So I sent her a message and offered to return it after explaining how much it was worth and that I didn’t feel right keeping it. She responded that the fact I contacted her about it made her feel like she had given it to the right person and to keep it. Nice compliment. I ended up selling it when I did my big sell off, but now that I do smoke various pipes made out of wood, I occasionally think about it. It was very much in the style of briar pipes I lean towards now. It’s the one I regret selling the most. Of course I probably still wouldn’t smoke it, it would probably be in my collection of pipes that are too nice to smoke 🙂.

I’ve thought about tobacco purchases and other than a free tin every now and then from 4Noggins or Watch City, I can’t think of anything particularly good. At the same time, I’ve had orders messed up, but every company that had done that always corrected it, so no big deal.

Sadly, we had a Dedicated pipe store in Phoenix that was magnificent, and it the inventory was remarkable. They could get the blends in stock nobody else could. Dad passed away and it went to his son, and he seemed to be on a mission to offend the clientele. Needless to say, the store ended up closing. I never experienced any of the nonsense but a lot of regular patrons of that store that I hold in high regard spoke about it. I wish the father had sold the store to someone with retail skills.

About a year or so ago, an on-liner I use, emailed me to let me know that Germain's RDF was back in stock, soon as I tried to buy some it was all gone by 8 that morning. Germain's releases are usually snapped up by Asian bulk-buyers here in the UK, it's frustrating. I sent off an email, with a bit of sour grapes, 😂 but they emailed back right away, then called me, assuring me that some tins had been set aside for regular customers, and I could order up to 2, which I promptly did. They've been golden since I started using them, a very friendly and helpful bunch.

Funny, I saw a thing just yesterday about how the Chinese have been buying up the bulk of the briar, making it difficult for artisans, in particular, to get good wood. (I'm sure the Savinellis and Petersons of the world are doing fine.)

My wife had an uncle retired game warden, smoked the pipe, I started bringing him a jar of Borkum riff tobbaco whenever I came to town. The old man’s face would light up like it was Christmas.

It was a dark and stormy night. Warren and I were sitting by the fireplace, a nice fire burning to warm the dark autumn night. Momentarily, our housemate Rich came up from the basement with a lit cigar.
"Warren" he said, "I can't finish this. Do you want it? I'm going to bed."
"Sure," said Warren.
Dumbfounded, I watched him smoke his cigar. "What?" he said "Haven't you ever smoked a cigar?"
"No, I've never smoked anything."
"Well, here" said Warren, "try this. It's pretty good." And it was, too.
Next day, I went to a tobacconist's shop I had seen downtown. And I found out how expensive cigars were. So I went to the drugstore across the street and bought a package of what turned out to be the most disgusting, revolting, volcanic cigars I have ever had to this day.
Another one of our housemates was a pipe smoker. I figured that had to be better than those awful dog turds in disguise I had bought So I went back to the same tobacconist and bought a briar pipe from the seconds bin, a little straight stemmed apple, and a couple ounces each of the shop's own vanilla and cherry blends. And that boys and girls is how I got started pipe smoking.

One more I was in this control room when an Ethylene Trailer truck exploded. Wound up with the coke machine on top of me, finally got it off of me, heavy sob, my older friend was hit by a steel, door, bleeding pretty good, took my brand new jacket and made a tourniquet, we brought him to the back fence where an ambulance was waiting, I went back to unit hobbling, got with fellows from another unit and showed them what valves to lay it by. Went to their control unit, bumbed s couple cigs, cup of coffe, they were busy laying their unit down. Went on smoking bench, shaking a little, by myself others were busy. Night super in truck stops, rolls down his window and shouts put that damn cigarette out. I rose up and said you old SOB you get out that truck I’ll stomp you in the ground. Window went up, he took off, never heard no more. Never got a thanks from Uncle Exxon.

Reminds me of when I was a kid and the standard reply, when asked "where'd you get that", was "off a dead injun". Of course, that was before I knew I was an injun.

Another +1 for The Country Squire. In early 2020, I had ordered a new Dunhill County 4109 Canadian. After the first smoke, I noticed that "nature" had struck and a small vertical fissure had opened up in the wall of the chamber. A flaw just below the surface which did not become visible until the first smoke. I contacted JD and he bent over backwards to make it right. Most places would have just said "Bummer. Here’s your money back." Instead, he went to his distributors website and made screen shots of all the available group 4 blasted Canadians which the distributor had in stock. I picked one and he ordered it in for me. Even though the replacement was a Ring Grain and not a County, (RG list price is $50 more), when I offered to pay the difference, JD told me to forget about the difference. Bending over backwards to make it right; I was already a big fan of the shop and am a bigger one as a result. Look up customer service in the dictionary and you’ll find a picture of The Country Squire.
