Hail Caesar is the newest product of the Coen Brothers and their an affectionate, goofy, and slightly surreal salute to the Hollywood of yesteryear. Placed in 1951, the movie revolves around the kidnapping of a top Hollywood star, Baird Whitlock, played by George Clooney, and the stresses of Capitol Pictures "fixer", Eddie Mannix, played by Josh Brolin.
Hollywood offers fertile ground for parody and satire, and some of the portrayals are not far different from the actual historical characters upon which they are based. There are plenty of hilarious and entertaining moments revolving around Commies, Gossip columnists, Clergy, Crucifixion, Musicals, and a Russian submarine.
If I have any kind of gripe it is that the picture feels more like a parade of set pieces rather than a continuous whole. Sequences don't always flow from one to the next. Still, it is worth a ticket to see such a rich subject properly and affectionately speared by two of our most gifted film makers.
Movie history buffs will find a great deal of satisfaction in the use of actual names - Eddie Mannix was "The Fixer" for MGM - and there are many such tips to long gone tinsel town.

My younger son recently saw this and recommended. Recommendations from him are few.

I am looking forward to this film. The Coens haven't disappointed yet. They deliver whimsy, wonderfully.
Thanks for the review Sable.

I'm a huge Coen brothers fan. I even love their not so great movies (i.e. Burn after Reading). Thanks for the recommendation.
