I had never smoked it before, having heard the tales. A check at TR shows the new STG formulation is garnering more positive reviews. When opened, you can literally smell it from 3 feet away. Definitely cherry flavor here, but black cherry was more apparent on the label than the smoke. Top half is an intense cherry fest, then mellows out at mid bowl. Finish is wet with accompanying dottle. Nicotine content is negligible. Faced with an open pouch, I took the published suggestions and mixed it with Prince Albert. 70/30 PA/Paladin worked for me and makes it an acceptable OTC smoke, so I can finish it, but not likely to purchase it again.

I used to love cherry blends, but Paladin was not one of them. I've read that it is better than it used to be. Thanks for the review. I had a manufacturers coupon for it a while back and bought a pouch just to try it. I will have to dig it out of the cellar and try it. Our scoutmaster used to smoke it exclusively.

The last time I smoked it was probably 40 years ago. It does have its fans since it is still around.

I was never a fan of cherry tobacco but Cult Blood Red Moon is pretty tasty stuff. Thanks for the review on the Paladin.

Tried a bowl a couple of years ago. Didn't get to the 1/4 point when it got dumped. I can't believe I smoked this stuff in the 70s.

I tried it in 1969. Too sweet and way too wet. Bought a tub a few weeks ago and was surprised. Not as wet and the flavor was toned down. One of my regular blends now.

Cherry? Nope, not for me. Not against most aros, but the OTC versions just leave me cold.

After thirty years, the only tobaccos I truly despise are Stonehaven and anything labeled Borkum Riff. I actually enjoy Paladin.

...well...I smoke Paladin on a regular rotation basis...I like it and as noted the STG version I find much better than the original...but I still like both...

It was one of the first tobaccos I tried. It almost made me give up the pipe in the first week. Then I stumbled onto this forum... the rest is history (so is the paladin)

I tried Paladin some years back. At that time there was a strong chemical taste that I couldn’t tolerate. I can’t think of any tobacco that I dislike more. For those that enjoy it... to each his own. You have my respect but I’ll pass on any new offerings.

Cherry blend, tin note detectable from 3 feet. The best of luck to you, but not in my lineup.

I picked up a pouch some time back; I'd read of a change for the better, plus I wanted to revisit the old days for a bit...it still didn't ring my bell, and got dumped into my "fruit-jar mix" ,a big jug where many cherry and some raspberry blends that don't make the grade end up.
This thread finds me puffing a bowl from that jar ,in a well rested H.I.S.{His Royal Highness}Canadian...could be just Sunday afternoon, or this relaxing old pipe, but this smoke isn't as bad as I thought it would be.

Seems like STG has improved all OTC blends although I didn't care for the pouch of Velvet I tried recently. I always thought G&H made a good cherry blend Top Black Cherry.

They STIL make that stuff? They had to keep something marketed to smoke in case you mistakenly smoked Royal Yacht. Not many other things will clear the palate of that nastiness.
