Picked up these pieces of petrified wood and one really cool jasper and a prairie agate yesterday. Fun fun.

They look great. What are you going to do with them?

They look great. What are you going to do with them? I will face polish the jasper and agate to bring out the details. I will give most of the wood to friends and the two little boys next door. A few will hang around as potential lapidary material. I have in mind a concrete countertop at some point, with polished slices of my favorites imbedded.

Sounds like you've got it all worked out. Show us pics when you get your worktop finished.

That is cool Don. Do just find these areas or do get info on where you might make your finds?

Some come out of guidebooks I have for various states, some from online, but most are from my own observation and educated guesses about local geology.

impressive guessing, don . I have been into rock collecting for some 50 years now. Since I was a young boy. Dad is a retired Geophysicist. I majored in Geology briefly in college. Worked in the petroleum industry for a decade. It has always been part of my life. You can become quite adept at locating and identifying the things you are interested in. It is amazing how fast people get an eye for spotting various rocks and minerals. Figuring out where the local geology may be conducive to a succesful hunt is where the book learning and prior field work comes in. A lot of road trips and hiking required.

Nice picks Don! That last line should be the first words to any aspiring rock hound. "A lot of road trips and hiking required"! Your right about recognizing the terrain after awhile. It's almost subconscious. The brain says, hey, this spot looks good. Same with reading streams for gold panning. Trial with much error. Lol
