I'd promised a wee while ago I'd do a review of GH R+M. I'd mentioned it in the 'What are you smoking ' thread, but I'd wanted to have a few bowls to really get a feel for the blend.
I've found that I need to have a few bowls to fully get the feel for a tobacco in R+M has been no different.
I'd bought it on a very reluctantant recommendation at the B+M in Belfast...a shop incidentally I went be returning to. I'd had the first bowl that day waiting to see a movie. While it wasnt bad,it didn't blow my socks off.
So...has time changed my opinion?
R+M is an aromatic, with rum and maple dressings. It comes as broken flakes, and joy! in an actual tin! The flakes are large, roughly cut.,and rub down quite easily, although the flakes tend to be a bit large. One of the things I look for is the aroma when opening the tin. R+M disappoints. The aroma reminds me of the cheap cigarette tobacco the sell in SA.
R+M burns fairly cool. A full bowl in my cobbit will take about 20-25 minutes to puff through...its not one for a quick smoke. And in saying that, heres the rub. I've been smoking it in the mornings before work, and it's a relaxing smoke, and I've had lots of positive comments on the aroma.
As to the flavour,well...
I smoked a bowl this morning while relaxing in the garden. The taste is definitely moreish. It's best if smoked in small sips, the the flavour comes through. As best as I can describe it reminds me of a Cape Malay curry,or a rich fruit chutney. Theres lots of fruit flavours, apricots being the one that springs to my mind...its also nicely spicy, warming to the mouth, but lacking tongue bite. The nicotine hit is quite strong.
The thing is,and I know I'm kind of repeating myself, its one you cant rush. You really need to give this one the time to enjoy. If you rush it,or you're puffing while doing something else, you'll miss the best of the flavour. I'll enjoy the rest if the tin,but I dont know if it'll become a regular feature in my cellar
